Sheet Metal Cutting?
ChrisS - 29/10/04 at 03:39 PM

What are people using to cut sheet metal with for things like side panels and floor etc.

Ive been looking at turner nibbler, but wondered if a jigsaw would do?

Cheers

I used a jigsaw for a lot of my metal cutting, with a suitable blade. Variable speed is good, as you need to go a bit slower, and a drop of oil on the blade helps.

Ear defenders are a VERY good idea! Oh, and friendly neighbours...

Jigsaw on top of polystyrene stops the flapping about.

I used the Turner one for my floor and all my aluminium panelling and bonnet. It does make a lot of little toenails but it was easy, oil the cut line and the cutter will last for ages. I bought some thin slitting blades for the 115mm grinder that are very good on sheet steel as well. As mentioned get some earplugs or defenders, I was cutting yesterday and didn't bother and I can still hear the ringing .

I'll have to agree with the jigsaw, with masking tape either side to stop marking the metal.

didn't somebody on here recently suggest using a router?

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why such bizzare methods of cutting sheet are being used when snips do the job so effortlessly and give such good results?

i use a router at work a lot, i cant see the blade lasting long, i sharpen mine every month or more often with regular use.

plasma cutter is what i use. complete waste of dough i havent used it in months.

ive got a hitachi nibler which is fantastic on ali up to 14g but does leave a slightly rogh edge, for steel ultra thin angle grinder disks, ther marketed for stainless steel but i use nothing eles now for steel (realy good for bronze to !) they cut faster than regular disks last just as long with less wastage.

I agree Mark, just found the jigsaw easier on long runs and across large sheets.
