What are these?!
djtom - 12/9/11 at 05:03 PM

I bought a job lot of tooling from an engineering workshop that was closing down and I'm selling it bit by bit on eBay.

I've just come across some items that I don't recognise. They're about 2" long, 1 1/2" wide and look like big thread taps, but the grooves are parallel, not spiral.

Any ideas (and are they worth anything!)?

The one without grooves looks like a reamer.

No wait! No spiral?

Roughing mills. definitely.

I though the flutes would be spiral on a roughing mill? Also the "teeth" would have to be staggered otherwise you really would produce a rough finish!

Depends on intended usage. Some milling is done with the cutter at an angle across the workpiece. With a roughing mill material removal is top priority, surface will be cleaned up by a later pass with a finishing cutter.

They seem to be for milling as i think I see an internal taper.

Ahaa! They are "Thread Mills" http://www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-threadmilling.htm

Yes, I am coming to the conclusion that theyy are thread mills. That would explain why the collection of them that I have acquired have different pitches between the teeth....!

Thanks for all input. Anyone want to buy them?
