Recommend a Hobby Lathe
mad4x4 - 23/4/10 at 12:13 PM

OK anyone recommend a hobby lathe..

Ideally Bench top
Metric Thread Cutting

Under £600 ish

For making up small fittings etc. If it could handle a brake disk that would be WAY COOL

coozer - 23/4/10 at 12:15 PM

Eblag, old school Boxford or the like. Much better quality than the naff machine mart ones imo.

r1_pete - 23/4/10 at 12:25 PM

As above, plus Myford ML7 / Super 7 also well catered for.

boggle - 23/4/10 at 12:31 PM

thats bottom line knackered ml 7 prices unless you find a dumb kid selling off his pops workshop and not knowing what he is selling.

I have a Harrison L5 Lathe like this one on Ebay. A good machine for home use.

Here is the item number:

The thing you most have to look out for is the diameter of the hole that goes through the cluck.

I have had one of these from Axminister (£440) for the last 3 years or so, and been really happy with it.

Saying that, i am about to upgrade mine to one of these as it is compatible with the milling attachment which i now have.

colchester student!

Madinventions - 23/4/10 at 03:37 PM

I was a student in Colchester a long time ago...

trextr7monkey - 23/4/10 at 04:10 PM

We have 2 Denford viceroys and 2 of the Machine mart jobbies - I put an ad on here a few months back and apart froma pipe bender which I'm taking to Stoneleigh it is all still sitting in workshop.
Open to respectable offers on the stuff as the money is going to work not myself

i dont know how familiar you are with lathes, but i found a book called 'the amateur lathe' to be excellent reading, and undoubtedly a good purchase before buying one. Makes sure you know what you are looking for.

ebay link

I have got one of these kicking about somewhere in the workshop. hasnt been used for ages but is bloody good little lathe. its the upgraded model to the one in the advert as it has metal gears in the headstock and quick release tail stock. may let it go if i get a reasonable offer.

Ok thanks for the pointers
looking a the axminster....

>Linky comparing it to Machine mart linky

the axminster seems more machine for a reasonable price.

there really is a lot to be said for a good quality second hand machine.

Agreed.

Can't go wrong with Colchester, Harrison, Boxford, Myford....the latter two a little smaller but still decent. Owned many of all of those in my time...currently have a Yamazaki (Mazak)...real beast, will turn 20" dia over the bed and 60" between centers...not many car parts that can't be done on it..

David Jenkins - 23/4/10 at 08:35 PM

The main thing with buying a second-hand is knowing about lathes - it's useful to know what to look for when examining a prospect.

flak monkey - 23/4/10 at 09:05 PM

Colchester Student is probably the best choice. Pretty much all spares still available from Colchester too.

If you can find a later one (with the rotary gear selector) it will be a metric one (most were dual scale and dual thread cutting) but the previous ones will mostly be imperial as metric was still an option!

Mine is the larger Master version and is a biiig machine though.

Do bear in mind you are looking at around 800kg for a Colchester student on a stand - so you will need to think very carefully about moving one as well. Although they can be delivered on a pallet easily enough moving them into position without a set of machinery skates could be fun.

thats why i mentioned a book, though an experienced friend is probably more use

trextr7monkey - 23/4/10 at 09:49 PM

Axminster stuff seems pretty good - we bought a small vertical miller from them a few years a go and it is spot on.

We also bought one of their work lamps togo with a new lathe and it is a decent bit of kit - bolts to wall/ window ledge and very bright.
The book is a good read too!!

NS Dev - 25/4/10 at 09:56 AM

I would second turbotone and flak monkey, Colchesters are about the best machine around for the money, and the student is a lovely little machine.

Don't touch imported chinese crap whatever you do!

kipper - 26/4/10 at 05:52 PM

I have a Myford ml 7 for sale, good machine that has done very little work.
Only selling as I have bought a Harrison L5.
It will have to be a bit more than 600 Quid though, but it has a lot of accesories with it such as divding heads milling kit , 4 and three jaw chucks etc.
Regards Denis

Whoops sorry about the big pic
