My new toy arrived today !
clairetoo - 4/3/10 at 06:23 PM

I finally gave in to temptation and bought myself a TIG welder this week - it arrived today so I just had to stop off at the local BOC agent and grab a cylinder of argon , and get in the garage to have a play

New TIG
New TIG

First ever weld
First ever weld

Just waiting for some filler rods to arrive now , and get on with a proper project - I desperately need tubular manifolds for my V6

imp paul - 4/3/10 at 06:36 PM

mistergrumpy - 4/3/10 at 06:40 PM

Yes you must've done that before
Nice choice BTW I have the AC/DC version of that. The company seem pretty good.

Nope - just took it out of the box , plugged it all together - and away I went !
I just had a try at some stainless exhaust tube I found under the bench - I just cant believe how good it's turning out !

If you've done some gas welding it gives you a head start, I'm getting ready to start welding parts together again and a manifold for the ZX9 is next on the list. I need to find a supplier and sort some bends out. Good start there Claire.

That is a good looking weld for someone who hasnt done it before. Id love a TIG welder but dont have the money or the space atm

very good effort for straight out of the box! one hint, learned from experience. set the delayed finish to about 5 seconds and take your finger off the trigger 1cm before you reach the end of the seam you are welding. this should start to wind down the current and stop you blowing through as demonstrated on pics.

ashg - 4/3/10 at 07:26 PM

tig is easy if you have a strong steady wrist. im guessing this is what is helping

coozer - 4/3/10 at 07:34 PM

Hmm, wish I had the cash, I'm real envied like

ashg - 4/3/10 at 07:41 PM

its all well and good having a tig but be warned people like dogwood will turn up at your house with broken bits of cast ali from their roof racks and ask if you can put a blob of weld on it

Indeed
What looks like I blew a hole at the end of the weld on the picture is actually my fault for having the torch pointing the wrong way while I tacked it - I will clear out the scrap bin at work tomorrow and have a good practice session - I need to get good real quick as I have an exhaust to make on a certain KL powered Mx5 at the weekend !

Think yourself lucky, young fella me lad.
I could have turned up with several sheets of alloy,
and asked you to weld me up a fuel tank.......

Wonder if my wife would like a new Tig welder for her birthday? Don't think I've got the bottle to find out though

omega0684 - 4/3/10 at 09:43 PM

can i order my 4-2-1 now or is there a waiting period?

MikeRJ - 4/3/10 at 11:50 PM

I've been on the verge of buying myself a TIG, but thought I'd be good and save the money as I don't really need one. This isn't making it any easier!

YQUSTA - 4/3/10 at 11:51 PM

Good work Claire.

Is there no end to your talent?

Ian

Staple balls - 5/3/10 at 09:21 AM

Do you have to be so bloody good at everything you do?

MikeR - 5/3/10 at 09:53 AM

I keep getting very tempted with a TIG set - a couple of weeks ago i persuaded myself that i don't have the space.

Strange how i'm now wondering what it would cost to extend the garage by 2.4m (space very easily available, i could do 10m but that would involve all sorts of plants being moved and 'discussions' with the g/f).

Clare - as usual with your work i'm very impressed. Now i've got a brand new old stock fuel tank i need modifying, can i join the queue after Mads and Alex ?
