its about a foot long,with 3 plungers at the base operating the dti.pretty old,the box its in has dovetailed joints!i'm guessin its for measuring
the bore of something but dont know why there are 3 plungers!

Looks like a 'Dial Bore Gauge'.
Used for checking for tapers or ovals in bores.
you got a picture of the dial face?
That may give someone a better chance of guessing!!

Agree....that is definitely a dial bore gauge.
Typically you will set it up (ie zero it) with ring gauge of known size and accuracy then use it to gauge bores giving you a plus or minus reading
compared to the gauge size.
