Vacuum Pump

anyone have any advice about obtaining a vacuum pump on the cheap. Enough to continually pull maybe 8 PSI.

Read somewhere about 10 years ago about modifying a compressor pump. Can't remember a lot about it though.

Any ideas?

fridge pump will pull a vac
dont know if it would be big enough for what you need

LDV's have a vac pump for the brakes and some older peugeots driven off a v belt. Not sure of the pressure they pull.

Obviously wont work if you need an in house one though.

I read on the web that using a car engine was a very effective and many times more powerful source than a vacuum cleaner etc to do vac forming of plastic. Yet to try this myself but it seems very good

I've got this for sale. £70 collected.


It was used to test pressure vessels.
When I was made redundant and the company closed it found it's way into my garage.

( by 8psi I take it you mean half a vacuum )

it depends what you want to vac form. I had good results with an american made 'shop vac' pulled a 500mm diametre half dome to a depth of 250mm on 5mm thick acrylic.
Shop vacs are about £40.

I'm sure the best solution is 907s pump though.

yeah in the past I've done some canopies for my r/c planes on a DIY box machine thing connected the Dyson, biggest is about 30cm long and 10cm deep though its just 0.8mm thick plastic. Definitely one of the most fun ways of making things

yeah in the past I've done some canopies for my r/c planes on a DIY box machine thing connected the Dyson, biggest is about 30cm long and 10cm deep though its just 0.8mm thick plastic. Definitely one of the most fun ways of making things


its a great thing to do. the problem with a dyson is they have a safety valve for in case any body parts get inadvertantly sucked in! i'm sure its fine for 0.8mm though.

You have to use gaffer tape to avoid getting sucked into the Dyson I just keep my clothes on while I clean up

P.S. one word Gaffa two words = Gaffa + tape

ive got a" mes dea" do a search. electric vacuum pump
cost around £230.(toyota mr2 s mk3s have them fitted due to mid engine layout ).its designed for electric vehicles.i built a daewoo matiz electric car.this pump is ultra quiet and has solid state vacuum switch.so nothing to go wrong.works a treat.have a look on www.diyelectriccar.com for info on cheap vacuum pumps.there is one called the thomas a lot of people use but its noisy and you have to bugger about with vacuum switches.mines costs more but its fit and forget.not so the others.
