Just checked elsewhere, it is 18th January 1962 (nearly its birthday), and 948cc (possibly frogeye sprite engine?)

Got to admit the RAC site is a bit limitied with its info but can be handy,it seems to throw up all Q plates and pre reg birthdays as jan 2001 which
is strange.
Also reads the lotus is blue.

What a waste of money. You can build 3 or 4 Locosts with that kind of money. People sure are daft!

It's not about the car, it's about people having the 'bragging' rights to say...
"Oooh don't you know, I own an original Lotus 7 blah, blah, blah..."
well good luck to them, for £14k - I'd rather have my car, my BMW and a good holiday with the lads - looking at t*ts and drinking beer!

If you want to see really insane prices try to buy a real AC cobra.
(hint)
Even a decent copy is going to be more than £15k.
The originals are always going to, rightly, get a higher price than replicas and lookalikes.
Each to their own, a replica 7/cobra goes better is likely to be more reliable and will be cheaper but it's a completely different hobby.

I beleive it was an A35 or Minor engine, the frogeye spec engine was in the S2 version for american export.
oops also in S1 but exports had twin carbs

I don't think you quite grasp this. That IS a classic car (pre-1960, though it sounds like it's registered later than that). It's not a
Caterham (which is based on a Lotus S3), it's an original Lotus S1!
A Swedish friend of mine has a mint S1, and brings it to the UK every year to blat around the countryside for a long weekend with a collection of
other 7's (Caterham's, Westie's, Sylva's, Fisher's etc.) and nothing stops him coming! All the panels are original ali!
Ooooh, here's a pic...
I bet once restored you could get at least three times that for it!
