Anyone got a 5/8" NPT tap I could borrow?
DaveFJ - 14/2/08 at 02:19 PM

Needed to cut thread for water temp sensor in new inlet manifold...

reasonably sure it is 5/8" NPT I need. same as the original hole on the Pinto injection manifold....

Alternatively if anyone knows where i could get one....

Cheers

5/8" NPT doesn't sound right to me, it's not a size I think I've heard of.

3/8NPT will measure roughly 5/8" when measured across the OD of the threads.

Could be completely wrong happens to me all the time .

yup your probably right....

not sure where I got 5/8 from....

I have a 1/8 NPT tap which measures aprox 10.6mm across the threads. The sensor i have to fit measure 16.9mm aprox

any clues???

Hi Dave

Mmm, sounds like it could be 3/8"

3/8" NPT is 18 tpi.
3/8" BSP is 19 tpi if that's any help.

OK....

finally got the deffinative answer.....

apparently it is a 3/8 USA Pipe thread...!

any chance that is the equivlaent of 3/8 BSP ???

That'll be NPT then.

As I said before, BSP is 19 tpi, NPT is 18 tpi.

I can have a look at work on Monday for a tap.

What metal are you tapping and how thick?

Do you have a tap wrench?

Might be better to weld on a threaded boss. (half socket)

Cheers Paul...

Just been looking and the cheapest i can find a 3/8NPT tap is >£15 plus vat & delivery!

The material is 10mm thick Ally plate so I think it should take a thread quite nicely...

I have a basic Tap/Die set so I have a Tap wrench.. although not huge it should be ok for that size thread in Ally....

Off out and about today so if anyone has any suggestions of where , near ipswich, might stock them I would be grateful....

Cheers

Well

I bit the bullet and bought a 3/8" NPT tap.. and it is correct cost me £23 by the time postage and tax was added

But I now have my inlet manifold fitted

If anyone needs to borrow a 3/8 NPT tap in the future... you know where to come

(BTW It is the same thread as the standard manifold water temp sensor on an EFI Pinto)

Thanks for everyones help on this
