wanted: very short length of 3" tube
smart51 - 29/6/10 at 02:42 PM

I need a very short length of thick wall steel tube to make a tool. I'm looking for about 70mm internal diameter so 75mm or 3" OD is ideal with something like a 3mm wall. It doesn't need to be exact. I only need a 20 or 30mm length. Do you have an offcut of old tube you would exchange for beer tokens? Please U2U.

I'm going to make a hole swaging / flaring tool using 3" pipe welded to a flat plate with a small hole in the centre plus an old hole saw with a nice rounded shoulder. A big bolt through the middle should hopefully pull a nice shape into some thin sheet with a 50mm round hole punched into it.

Here's a pic of what I have in mind. Pull the black hole saw into the grey tube welded to a plate and the hole in the blue sheet steel should be flared.

If anyone has an old hole saw of the right size and shape, even if it is blunt and useless, I'll pay your postage to take it off your hands! Rescued attachment locost swage tool.JPG

Might I suggest you make it like this to prevent the edge of the pipe creasing the panel

I will look for some pipe at work tomorrow

Suggest away. Is the pipe likely to make a circular ring depression in the sheet without the plate at the top? I don't need that. How wide does the rim need to be to prevent damaging the sheet?

Hi, you dont need tube then just get a bit of 1" flat about 3.3 x the dia you want and bend it round a mandrel (anything the right dia)weld it up and then weld to your pate ive made scroll jigs this way for making gates etc

The rim only needs to be about a cm but you do need a lip I reckon... I'd be worried about it punching through if you've just got the wall of the tube pressing into the thin sheet.

Version two definately works better LAst time I needed a small section of tube Merlinmotorsport sorted me out. I did buy quite a few other bits at the same time so they bunged it in at a very competitive price (I only needed 100mm to make a cast for my wax lathe blanks). Don't ask (didn't work).

I've checked, I don't have any, sorry mate.

Nice idea though, may give it a try when I've finished a couple of the current projects
