Wtd: SVA friendly Exhaust Can, Buy/Borrow?

Just failed with a quill T3 5" carbon Can at 103dbA.
I need one that fits on a stainless 52mm OD pipe and will get me through the sva noise test of less than 101 dbA.

The problem is I'm in north Essex, but I have an original Thunderace can that has been though a couple of SVA's.

It's had the bracket removed and the inlet modded to slide on 2" pipe.

On Jon Beadle's cross flow it passed at Norwich (87dba)

You would be welcome to borrow it, or maybe look for the same sort of thing on eBay.

I think that it will be different on an R1 as mine is checked at 8800 rpm.
I really need something that has been proved on this engine. Thanks for your offer. Cheers Martin

A T/ace and an R1 is the same engine, give or take a couple of tweaks.

It was the 5 speed g/box that was the downfall of the T/ace.
Didn't cut the mustard as a sports bike but it was bl**dy quick enough for me.

The only problem is that I have a bike can and it failed sva.
They are built to lower standards than a car and only have to pass a driveby test at max 84dbA @ about 30mph and at about 20ft away.
The car test involves putting the sound meter 500mm away and on idle a standard bike can is already at 82dbA.
At 8800 rpm the can might as not be there!

you will find a good oem silencer far quieter than your quill, its designed to be quiet at low rpm, and 8800rpm is not low rpm.

Also any aftermarket end can is not designed to get the bike through the emissions and sound tests that the manufactuers have, so they are always louder, at least at some point of the rev range.

The OEM silencers are considered resitrictive and are often removed becuase of this.

I'd recommend at least trying an OEM silencer, like the kind offer above before pooh poohing it. I might have misread his post, but all it will cost you is postage I think, and thats not much to loose on a car worth as much as yours.

I'm not pooh poohing it, I just don't want to keep trying things as I want to try and get the car on the road for at least one of the bigger summer shows and time is getting shorter. There is only one tester at Mitcham so getting a re-test is going to be slow and the reception I got from wimbledon vro wasn't exactly confidence building.
If someone says that the thunderace can, will pass, then that is the route I will go.
I just need someone to say that they went this route first.

The new Fazer has an exhaust valve similar to an exup but it is not to enhance performance but to reduce the drive by noise to meet the more stringent levels now imposed. Can you fit an after market baffle to a can for the test like the ones race cans use for MOT time ?

sorry, ref my earlier comment - I didn't mean it to sound quite as harsh as it came out.

I knew I had read some where about the quill cans, I remember it from when I used to always buy bike mags, and they had just launched the T3.

I had a rummage through there website as I've obviously binned the mag I read it in, and this is what I found.

"The T3 has a unique exhaust note, reasonably quiet up to 3,000 revs, but an impressive straight through race sound after 4,000 revs."

So I really do think a standard OEM can could make the 2dB difference at 8800rpm.

Did I read you have a noise meter? You could fit it and test it (I know its not calibrated, but it will be close) within an hour or two.

anyway, if no one comes back with any better ideas, it might be worth a punt.

Lots of people have passed with that engine, using the standard can - but obviously not your manifold and downpipe set up as I bet that is unique.

That will make a difference, so I doubt anyone could definativly say it will or won't work unfortunatly.

I've just spoken to Martin Keenan (MK engineering) who will sell me the bits to make up my own can. He is currently too busy to make one, getting a car ready for sva and the show.
My idea is increase the length and to put a right angle on the exhaust exit because this will mean the sound meter being turned away from the rear of the car and less likely to pick up any reverb from my rear firewall.
My induction noise shouldn't be a problem as I have a standard airbox that is ducted forwards of the engine.
I'll post the results once done!

I would suggest a suzuki 1200bandit can
Very cheap on the bay, flange to slip on adapter available very(too) quiet for me so I cut one I half

Any dimensions for the bandit can?
What revs did they test yours at?
Mine was 8800 which seems a bit higher than most.

Sorry Martin, I SVA'd with a std R1 can, this at about 7000
You must have set a very high RPm on your SVA form.
Not at home at the moment the Bandit can is about 1" bigger diameter at a guess and really was to quiet for me post SVA.
But I can't guarantee what the output will be for you , sorry.
However, I'd lend you my flange and if you get a can cheap I'll take it of you if it's no good as I want a quiet track day can

I sourced a 6" powerflow silencer today and fitted it. (same length as the quill)
It is worse now at 106dbA !
Luckily I had the foresight to get one with a right angle tail pipe so tommorow I am going to fit the Quill box onto that so there are two boxes!

Where can I fing the official power figures for an 05 R1 engine?
The only way this is going to pass is if I get the test rpm lowered.

I already have two at 10500 which is more realistic.
The sva tester said if I had evidence he would alter the test requirement.
At 8000 rpm I measured 100dbA, so I hope it will pass!
