Wilwood Powerlite Group Buy (NOW CLOSED)
se7ensport - 10/3/08 at 12:00 PM

Right I've had a chat with Rally Designs and they will do us a deal for 10 sets or more.

It's the Powerlite kit (includes calipers, solid discs & mounting brackets) and normally retails for £220 + vat + pads + vat - they do it with different mounting brackets to suit either the sierra, escort or cortina upright.

"A new range of braking kits designed utilising the new lightweight Powerlite caliper and a 257mm solid brake disc. These kits are suitable for kit cars and smaller formula cars where lightweight is so critical. (kits suit most 13" wheels)." http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=562_563_567&products_id=10508

They'll do them for £180 + vat

if you want a set of Smart pads they are £20 + vat and if you'd prefer drilled and grooved discs they are £26+ vat extra

postage is £8.50 + vat

You will be paying Rally designs direct as i'm only organising the discount, however, you will need to confirm your name and number to me so that I can coordinate, all orders will need to be placed around the same time.

Once we have 10 confirmed i'll PM you the details to contact Rally Designs Direct.

Yep, please send me a U2U with you name and number.

hobbsy - 10/3/08 at 12:31 PM

Ever so slightly off topic - anyone know if the brake pipe fittings are the same as on the Ford M16's. I've got braided hoses on at the moment. Will they be long enough?

If I need new ones then other people might as so could be worth negotiating a discount on these as part of the group buy?

se7ensport - 10/3/08 at 12:40 PM

haddn't thought of that pipes, you might me able to buy adapters?

However, I'll give them a call and see what the options are.

hobbsy - 10/3/08 at 12:49 PM

While your one the phone Mintex 1144's might be another good option for pads.

twybrow - 10/3/08 at 12:51 PM

Sod it, I'll go for it. I was planning it as a long term mod, but hey, they can be stored for a while!

JJM - 10/3/08 at 01:14 PM

Heres a pic of the Powerlite caliper-you can see the brass brake pipe union at top right-this screws into rear of caliper-approximately where the second 'W' of Wilwood is.

Hope that helps.

RE brake lines, Wilwoods take 1/8 NBT, the kit contains a male 1/8 NBT to male 10mm allowing you to fit a swivel female to your existing line.

Depending on type of line you already have there are 3 options. 1. it bolts straight on. 2. you can swap the end over yourself to a swivel female. 3. the hose is swagged, you will need someone else to cut and attach correct fitment for you.

M1144 pads are £49.95 + Vat

madrallysport - 10/3/08 at 03:04 PM

hobbsy - 10/3/08 at 09:05 PM

Just as a sanity check Fury's all use modified Mk2 Escort uprights don't they? Mine look like this (nabbed from their build website). Want to ensure I get the right brackets! Rescued attachment upright.jpg

tom

se7ensport - 11/3/08 at 09:38 AM

i've had a further chat with them, they will also do the sierra powerlite rear kit to convert from drums, they can do them for £255.60 + vat + cables £34.50 + vat (normally £319.50 + cables + vat).

if you would like smart pads - they are now £16.75 + VAT.

On the list so far:

se7ensport
hobbsy
twybrow
welderman
madrallysport
Taz Surfleet
Indykid
colt_mivec

The list for this group buy will close Sunday evening so we can order from Monday as there is already enough interest to secure the discount.

Those already on the list please can you confirm which kit and if you require pads so that I can pass an accurate list on to Rally designs on Monday.

Any new orders I need first name, surname, telephone number, which kit (sierra, escort or cortina) and if you are ordering pads.

Thanks

Alex

Its 1/8 NPT fo the caliper. If you look at the catalogue it has it listed. I had M16 Calipers with a banjo bolt on the caliper end to braided hoses. I have now fitted Wilwoods and removed the Banjo end from the braided part and replaced it with a female fitting to suit the male to male adapter on the caliper.

Looks like Escort to me - I'd give Fisher a call and confirm (they are pretty helpful lads).

hobbsy - 11/3/08 at 11:48 AM

Just tried them but they are away track testing with a customer today (lucky them).

Will try tomorrow...

indykid - 11/3/08 at 03:53 PM

has anyone any experience of the wilwood smart pads?

i'm just trying to weigh up whether or not i should fork out the extra for the mintex 1144s that i know people rave about.

also, RD sell 1/8NPT brake line ends. i'm assuming i can chop the ends off my goodridge hoses and put these compression ends on to save messing about with adaptors? there's plenty of length in my flexis from memory.

tom

locoR1 - 11/3/08 at 05:13 PM

I have to agree they look like sierra uprights to me with an adapter in the top are you sure yours are identical?
The round cap in the back of the hub gives them away as sierra escort didn’t have anything like that!

P.S I’m seriously tempted by the brake kits but my brake budget went on a digi-dash last week.

Dave....

procomp - 11/3/08 at 05:21 PM

Hi forget the smart pads. They are either to hard by far or dont last the distance depending on which ones you use.

Following on from another thread last week i contacted rally design to find out what was actually happening with the pads and they told me they had only had the Mintex pads done two weeks ago for the powerlights. I haven't as yet tried the mintex in the powerlights but have been using other pads modified to fit the powerlights and all worked great . I would assume that the mintex will be as good as the ones we have been modifying so i would say that the mintex are a must now they are available.

Cheers Matt

locoR1,

I've got another thread going but here is a photo of mine which looks exactly the same as the earlier one (just a bit dirtier and rustier!) Rescued attachment MY_uprights_sml.jpg

hobbsy - 11/3/08 at 06:35 PM

Procomp - how much of a mod did you have to do to get them to fit the powerlites and what fitment pad were they that you modded?

One of the reasons I'm curious to hear of other options / recommendations is that my mate with a XE powered Westy (~180bhp) has had real problems with 1144's glazing on track days.

those are sierras, ive got escort ones on my fury and they are much straighter at the top with the top ball joint threading straight into the strut without the dogleg bit.

se7ensport

put me down for a sierra rear set with the cables and a set of the poly a pads.

Hi Matt

I'm curious about the difference between the pads - having looked at the friction versus temp graphs the smart pad sits between M1144 and M1155, so where do the M1144 out perform i.e. feel etc...

I've already got M1144 in my sierra calipers and don't want to take a step backwards in performance.

hobbsy - 11/3/08 at 08:05 PM

cossey - thanks for that photo - I now realise how different the Escort ones are!!! Also seem like they'd be quite a bit lighter...

they are and the geometry is supposed to be a bit better hence why im using escort front end and sierra irs rear end (all be it with a freelander diff)

the biggest problem is find them as they are getting rare now (especially is you want the rs ones which are supposed to be the best one to used)

matt_gsxr - 11/3/08 at 08:47 PM

Following that tangent...

Escort RS are basically the same as capri (all models), so are fairly plentiful on e-bay and probably elsewhere.

The steering arms for these are bolt-on and are expensive (i.e. £40 a pair) if they are not included. The earlier (mk1 3 litre) hubs are a bit heavy.

The only confusion with using these is that you need RS TRE's to interface with a standard escort steering rack.

Matt

Hugh_ - 11/3/08 at 09:23 PM

Interesting to see some other Fury front upright setups, I've also get escort ones on mine.

Have to agree the guys in the workshop are very helpful, have often popped in there for a chat about various problems. The benefit of living 4 miles from there

hobbsy - 11/3/08 at 10:22 PM

I'm not that far away from where the Kit Car Workshop used to be - not that it helps any more!

Paradoxia0 - 11/3/08 at 10:25 PM

I am guessing these will have a lot more stopping power than the standard Sierra calipers I have on my Viento.

Also, what are the pros and cons of these solid disks rather than the standard vented Sierra ones?

(Seriously tempted, just need to find some money first )

Mark

hobbsy - 11/3/08 at 10:29 PM

I don't think the outright stopping power is really that much different but there is a large weight saving.

Ditto vented vs solid as on a light car such as most of these (certainly BEC's) vented disks are overkill and may take a while to come up to temperature.

Its all unsprung weight as well so benefits in handling to be had.

carnut - 12/3/08 at 12:46 PM

Does anyone know what the weight saving over vented sierra disks and calipers is?

The Great Fandango - 13/3/08 at 10:30 AM

Oh feck, this is just the group-buy I'm looking for but I'm unsure what I need!

For a while I've been looking to buy both front and rear brake kits for my Luego Velocity but have been unsure what to purchase.

As I didn't build the car people have told me that the Velocity is based on the Sierra donor.

It already has discs on the rear so I'm not sure which kit I need for my rear?

Aaargh!

Any Luego nuts out there know what I need before placing the order?

Cheers

The Great Fandango - 18/3/08 at 11:20 AM

Hee Hee!

Sod paying the mortgage for the month...

1x Sierra Drilled/Grooved Front Kit
1x Sierra Drilled/Grooved Rear Kit
1x Hand Brake Cable
2x Pair of 'Smart Pads'
1x Postage

Total order £662

Aaargh!!! That's one fifth the car of the car spent on brake upgrades!

Should look (and stop) nicely

hobbsy - 18/3/08 at 01:38 PM

Just rang up and ordered mine, when for the 1144's instead of the smart pads...

locoR1 - 18/3/08 at 05:22 PM

After receiving a u2u from se7ensport at 11am yesterday I rang Rally Design around 11.30am and ordered mine.

Didn’t expect them for a couple of days but they arrived today just before 12am now that’s what I call customer service well done Rally Design

Thanks to se7ensport for organising this top man!!!!!

All I’ve got to do now is find the time to fit them amongst all the other jobs not finished yet

The Great Fandango - 22/3/08 at 06:23 PM

It literally is 'Brake Porn'...

Brake Porn!
Brake Porn!

Two things I've noticed...

1 .It's a shame the Wilwood logos look different front to rear

2. I'm struggling to get the hand brake cable through the threaded bar and nipples supplied with the kit. Did anyone else order the rear kit plus cable?

got mine too, next day delivery, fantastic work.
