Most hardtail trikes I`ve seen have a single person seat with a hinge underneath at the front and two small springs under the rear of the seat.

I want to use the (CX500) donor bike`s tandem seat for my trike, but I don`t think the usual mounting setup will work right (passenger will have about twice the vertical travel the rider will over any given bump if the whole thing is hinged at the front).

Any thoughts on this sort of arrangement - four parallel links to keep the seat horizontal through its suspension arc with a spring/shock in the middle?

The only downside I see is if certain tender body parts would get between the fuel tank and front of the seat (ouch!).

and don't blow the tyres up too hard.

You could always put a hump in the front that your package rests against, like a saddle.

Some retro-cruisers use mountainbike shocks for the seat supports:

....and others just stick a medical gel pad between the high density foam and the top cover:
