Extremely wierd, but attractive in a perverse sort of way.

Must weigh a fair bit for a little 600cc motor.

Morgan wooden use ash for their chassis if it was heavy.

Canoe makers used to use several sheets of very thin ply laminated together to build up a skin that is both strong and light.

I wonder if that's what was done here?

Triton - 23/2/11 at 07:39 PM

They still do David and they cost a small fortune. It's called strip built, thin bits of wood then resin and cloth to seal it all. Very strong and very light as the wood is only about 1/4 thick.

I quite like it as it's different

Dingz - 23/2/11 at 10:59 PM

I like it, sort of reminds me of the early wooden Marcos.

Built by a guy called Friend (pronounced Free-end, I think) Wood, as I'm sure Panichat's link explains, if it wasn't blocked by our company firewall!

Inspired by Frank Costin's aerodynamic wooden monocoque designs. Friend also owns Costin's Auto V prototype, with a full complement of wheels:

There was quite a detailed and fascinating article on the construction of Tryane II in 'Cars and Car Conversions' some years ago. IIRC it was (is?) fitted with a specially manufactured 5-speed version of the Citroen 2CV gearbox, which allows it to pull a very high top speed with very good fuel economy.

I did know about that one, but the extra information and new pictures are very interesting!

Thanks
