Canoe makers used to use several sheets of very thin ply laminated together to build up a skin that is both strong and light.
I wonder if that's what was done here?
They still do David and they cost a small fortune. It's called strip built, thin bits of wood then resin and cloth to seal it all. Very strong
and very light as the wood is only about 1/4 thick.
