Pic of ours in the photo archive. Its built up from sealed mdf with SVA 19mm rad on the bottom edges, covered with expanded vinyl. Fits behind the flange on the scuttle with bow shaped trim piece covered in the same material to cover the scuttle flange. No fasteners show. Indicators are hidden until lit.

Sorry for changing subject, but does any1 know if mk sell carbon dashes?
For my interior im gonna buy a sheet on 2mm Carbon fibre to cover the trans tunnel, with milled out rounded squares on 5mm alu to surround the gearstick, handbrake and key, starter button. With the carbon dash and R1 clocks mounted from behind like hellfires (Amazin dash by the way)

I have a few more, I will post them tonight if possible.

For those that have seen my car this will/should make sense, for those that have not, you have to imagine

My dash is made from ply wood, covered in 1/2 foam and then vinyal over the top

the scuttle frame is about an inch inside the alui scuttle cover (ie the shiney bit that you see)
the dash is then placed into the void, and as it is slanted forward it stays there by its own device, on the sharp edge of the alui I have put some fancy U shaped edgeing, that covers that sva unfriendley sharp edge. and also by magic (careful design) when the U edgeing is pushed into place the dash board is clamped in fairly tight, there are no screws or fastenings holding the dash in place

Here's mine, slightly modified for SVA (digidash flush, central metal switched removed, black plumbers tubing used for bottom radius which actually looks good and will be let after SVA)

BTW - beautiful job Hellfire.

The main clock cluster is mounted in ally then the mdf is going to be covered in black vinyl - bit of imagination required at the moment to visualise it but it will look ok i think. the warning lights are going in the curved section mounted in the same way. isolator on the left and fuel and volt meter on the right of the wheel.

Pic on archive. Set up works OK, but suspect MK2 will be tried soon as things change when you get on the road! Too busy trying to avoid everyone else who now appear to be driving in slow motion to watch dials. Bigger shift light would be good, then forget rev counter, forget speedo as you will always be over the limit.

sorry chaps, i didnt check my post, i just posted and ran! - had things to do. had a v. productive day today, was outside at 9.00 am drilling and filing the holes in the ally for the dash, sanded the cut outs on the MDF dash blank, PVA'd the black vinyl onto it, then followd up with painting the chassis (when the sun got round to it about 11.00), put pedal box back together on F27, fitted new top coilover mountings to the front pair on my F27.

you have to make the most of this weather when you dont have a garage! Shame my long bank holiday weened is now over though

I got carbon fibre rolled at the bottom with 20mm dia roll.
Simple but quite effective and not bad for £20. Reused bike gauges (except fuel)

Typo, should have said radius, ie 40mm dia

You made me panic for a sec there!
Top edge has been radiused to 2.5mm

Radii are a pain to acheive, at the moment I have a stud on the exhaust mounting with a 5/8 UNF nut (mini copper mount) Cant put a plastic cover over it as it would melt. Any suggestions? This should be the other section but what the hell.

IFAIK you can't get the 100mm diameter sphere into that area on ours. But, we did have a job rounding the edges on the exhaust and corresponding brackets. I'm sure it will pass now...

Struggled to get the vinyl round the edges of the cut outs so there will be a few areas that dont have total coverage, but thats life im afraid - thinner dash would have made it easier.

I was all out of ideas of how to hold the vinyl on the inside edges of the cut outs while the glue dried, then i remembered i had the bits i cut out in the first place........................woo hoo, glued the edges, heated the vinly to allow it to stretch then forced the cut outs back in to hold it all in place while it dries.

moral of the story, .............dont throw any waste away until you are sure you have completed the job - im glad i didnt

Very funky !

One way round it is to spray adhesive round the edges of the cutouts and the face of the dashand lay the vinyl onto it then turn it over and cut a slit in the vinyl through the holes up to the thickness of the dash from the edge of the hole. Then cut slots the other way on and make strips of the material instead of removing it. Spray adhesive onto the back of the dash and pull the strips tight while sticking them to the adhesive on the rear. Staple the strips for added security and cut off any excess. The narrow bits left between your cutouts will have made the job awkward.

i didnt remove any material Pete, i just cut slits in it and pulled it round. if i were to do a few of them (god forbid!) it would get easier and easier no doubt about it.

Tractor boy. Not boring but functional and relatively easy to make i bet! - i will know better for next time

Hey Col, that dash is very tasty. Ours is pretty conventional, pic below:
One thing on yours- the key looks a long way over, will that not be outside of the SVA steering wheel radius allowance? Or does the key itself not count as a protrusion? We moved ours closed to the steering wheel to be safe...

I dont know Jmb, does anyone know if the key constitutes an interior projection as far as SVA?

If it's there when the passenger is in it's a projection. What seat belts are you using? I don't think I could reach that far across the car with mine fastened. I'll have a go in a bit.

Pete,

Its a Formula 27 which is a narrow body, only 36 inches between mounting points for rollbar.

I use 4 points and the key was only about an inch closer before i rehashed the dash and i could reach it no worries. - maybe i just have long arms!

simple solution for the projection would be to cut a slice in a 10p bouncy ball and wedge the butt of the key in there with a bit of no nails - job done. post SVA just cut it off or get it re-cut.

Heres ours at its present state. Its about the 6th version we have made and taken months to get there!

The greay fibre glass will be sprayed black when finished.

I only covered mine with Alcantara. I didn't know I had to employ the services of automotive design consultants

Cheers lads, The dash has been on the go for nearly 6 months!!!!! It would have been quicker to carve it out of solid Kryptonite!!

So little spare time at the moment, i have hardly any time to spend on the car, let alone the website. I'm even busy at work, so have very little time to organise my social life and surf the net!!

Is there any copy right issues with the dash pictures, I mean these two are great may have to put a slant on mine with these in mind, or I to will be in the standard hall of shame.
