Which quick release steering hub?
MakeEverything - 20/8/09 at 09:48 PM

As title.

Im worried that im going to break something squeezing my fat arse into the GT, so im looking for an easy solution. I dont mind making something, but wondered if anyone has already done this safely. Its too easy (And expensive) to buy a QR hub kit, and even then, im not convinced you get all the parts you need to make it work.

The folding ones look quite good, but theyre expensive still.

Any ideas?

people will talk you out of the wilwood ones, i'm not sure why, they're cheap, and they work well. people say theres play in them. don't find any problem with them myself

if you do get one, get one from rally design. with that steering wheel you need a sparco/momo adapter for that steering wheel

I got one of the "snap off" ones and V impressed with it
No slop after many on off cycles and miles and seems like a good design
Only fits one way round and quickly/easily removed & put back on

Can be locked on with a key as well

It will bring the wheel a couple of cm closer to you though when attached...

IIRC got it off eBay for not much money

Looks like this one...

I would also be interested in whether you can make one. I need a steering wheel smaller than the 16" one i have atm and to buy a boss costs £60

That looks like a Mountney Corsa D steering wheel.... in which case Mountney do what is called their own 'quick release' kit for it. Think it's about £40 ish.

The official snap-off lockable ones are brilliant, but they're about £130. And fitment models available is quite short.

I saw the Rally Design and similar ones and considered them, but thought if I was buying a Mountney steering wheel and boss, I might as well get the whole package from them.

I've heard good reviews about them, but will let you know in about a weeks time how mine actually is!
