nope, you can have 2 universal joints out of line with each other (so that each one makes a 10 degree bend in the collumn)
sva manual shows a few other acceptable set ups too

Jumping n the band wagon
Hopefully Santa is bringing me an SVA manual for christmas.
In the photo is it point A, B, both or none that make it collapsable

both a and b make it collapsible.
a makes it collapse if the rack tries to come towards you, b makes it collapse when you try to push the wheel towards the top mount with your head
