Driveshaft Fabrication?

I need to mate the A Series gearbox to the Smart car rear hubs. I've had a quote to cut-n-shut the two shafts together, but not happy as driveshafts are torque sensitive. Are there any other options? Onviously money is the issue, but I want a good strong cost effective solution.

Cheers. Rescued attachment DSC02073.JPG

can you not use the mini front end and fit modify something so you can use thesame wheels? obvioulsy some mods needed to stop rear wheels from streering.

other than that, no idea.

You can get strong, custom driveshafts made for quite a reasonable amount of money.

Geoff Berrisford Engineering
in Nantwich is a name that is frequently mentioned on here.

judging by the diameter of those shafts i'm guessing they're of tubular construction rather than solid,? if so cutting and shutting should be an easy proposition. wouldn't worry me to be honest, if done properly you should not have any problems.
Obviously you can't beat a one piece item though, and GB's shafts are superb, couple of hundred quid well spent, especially if your having to pay someone to cut and shut yours in the first place.

Thanks for the info, I'll try GB and see what they say.

The Smart driveshafts are solid and well over engineered. Might be good for a higher output power unit in the future!!

Crikey, they must weigh a ton unless the photo is deceptive, stick a V8 in there, they would cope easily
joking aside the GB shafts are a nice bit of kit and lighter than standard sierra ones.
Good luck with the conversion.

Apparently solid driveshafts are not as strong as the gun drilled equivalent. Having said that, those look well up for the job.
GB did mine and its worth paying £160 for peace of mind - just give them a spec or drawing and they will send them in a couple of weeks.
