Is this too close ?

Before I start cutting an exit wound in the bodywork will I get away with the silencer this close too the wheel ? Its about 1 1/2", I can fit an heat shield and the whole system will be wrapped, I really want a side exit this time as I don't want too spoil the airflow under and out the back of the car thru the defuser etc...... Ive put a lot of work into this area too get a nice flat bottom and then a defuser under the engine diff etc.......
Will help on track too with noise (drive by) as it exits on the opposite side too most noise meters on the tracks I can think of. Rescued attachment ex3.JPG

I wouldn't .....

Radiated heat could still be pretty bad after you shut down.

Would be a shame to have tire failures due to de-lamination of the plys.....

dont know if it means anything john but when I rented MK's cat for my Indy it was much closer to the rear arch than that ie the tailpipe

but didnt seem to affect it at all just made it luke warm I had visions of all the arch melting etc

and your tyres get hot anyway

if theres not much movement should be fine

but a tyre is more important than a wheel arch

Not what I wanted too hear, when you come off circuit the tyres can be too hot too touch with bare hands I was hoping with a heat shield I would be ok......

I'd prefer a bit of extra space. 1 1/2" seems too little if the exhaust moves a bit under load.

The engine is solid mounted, as is the silencer.

Can the wheel move towards it at all? Since the shielding will take up some space, you'll probably have 1" of space left. Is this sufficient to prevent excessive heating of the tyre?

How much does the tyre "grow" under acceleration and at speed, I know they get taller. If it doesn't catch you should be alright.

Maybe you could put a Small fan to run on after you stop to keep the air moving past the tyre and exhaust?

Would take up very little size and weight, have no experience of this... was just a little idea.

Wouldn't the heat shield get just as hot and act as a radiator?

Exhaust rap the can - you could touch my headers on the Avon when they were hot and wrapped.

I can,t see a problem myself.

Tin tops have the exhausts within 1 1/2" of the floor pan and do not catch fire, blister the paint etc.

I,d not worry about it myself.

I think it should be ok, hole going in bodywork tomorrow so too late after that, its a big fat silencer and don't get too hot anyway........

Isn't it illegal to heat youre tyre this way??
Maybe an alli plate on a liitle distance which also cathes some air grom under the car.
Does this exhaust get hotter then 100 degrees? You tyres could have this...

Press on regardless my friend. Exhausts are pretty cool that distance from the engine anyway. I've seen them much closer to flammable bits on rally cars with no issues at all.

OT putting 2 (or more) pictures in a post

First don't use the attachment doohickie under the text entry box.

Step 1: put the pictures in your photo archive (or on a website somewhere)

Step 2: Press the yellow button just above the entry box (picture of mountains and sun?) and type (or cut and paste) the picture location to specify the picture.

In the photo archive grab the location from under the picture (it's [img ]upload/something.jpg[/img ] or somesuch) the location will be http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/upload/something.jpg

Step 3: Press as many times as you have pictures
You can obviously put text between the pictures if you want.

Step 4: Press preview to make sure you got the locations right.

Once you are used to the [img ] stuff it puts in your text entry box you can type it in by hand if it's quicker. It looks more complicated than it really is.
