what calipers

I got my recon front calipers yesterday and tried them on my upprights with my 235mm Diameter (approx) vented disks. The disks fit on the upright but the caliper wont bolt to the upright bacause the diameter of the disk is too large.

Do i need new calipers that accommodate larger disks (do they just have longer lugs with the mouting holes in?)

or do i need different uprights with longer lugs with the caliper mouting holes in?

If its the callipers i need to change does anyone know what model of sierra i need to get them from to suit a 235 (approx) diameter vented disk?

You could turn the discs down if it's not too much?

No facilitles to do so Wyn, besides its about 20mm i think.

its a fairly standard set up......Vented disks and sierra callipers i just need to know if its my upright thats wrong or my capplier?

Discs

As far as I know there were two sizes of front vented discs on sierras, 260mm(ABSmodels) and 240mm .

The calipers are different on each model with larger pistons and larger surface area on the pads but the mounting holes were the same. So if the calipers are for vented discs they should fit.

Earlier models had solid discs so maybe the calipers are for that type.

I seem to remember that the 2.3diesel has vented disks, i shall ask my supplier to get a pair of them and see if they fit.

I don't understand this at all!

The smallest dia discs that were fitted to sierras were the 240mm x 25mm discs as fitted to fwd escorts etc as well.

If the disc is too large then are you sure they gave you the right discs and not the bigger ones???

There are no discs smaller than 240mm (approx) fitted to this generation of fords, and there's no need to ask for 2.3 diesel discs, all the later sierras had vented ones, from the 1.6 through to the 2.0.

As was said, the ABS models had bigger discs and the 4x4 models had a different offset on them too.

Hi Locoboy

It's a shame you can't turn the discs down - there has to be an easier way than buying new calipers!

I don't know much about the Sierra setup although I had it on my Fisher Fury a few years ago but my memory is not what it used to be!

Yeh, second what NSDev says. Theres no way they should need turning down or anything if they are in fact the 240mm discs. It sounds as though they are larger than 240s.

I had the disks off a mate who ran them for a bit on his Mk Indy with sierra callipers (i am trying to find out which ones)

so they do fit under 'some' of the sierra calipers.

Just not the ones i have they have not been used so i can swap them for the right ones no bother.


Tried to upload a photo but i wont work at the moment.........

The callipers do bolt directly to the upright dont they? im not missing a mounting plate or anything silly am i?

Yes, they bolt directly to the uprights. Measure the actual disc diameter, I'll take a very good bet that they are the 260mm discs not the 240's.

a pair of new 240mm discs is £20 or so, so don't worry about it just buy a new pair!

just taken the disk off and measured it, 240mm x 25mm

does this mean that the upright is wrong or is it that i have solid disk calipers?

gawd knows!

I thought the solid discs were 240mm as well, so if the OD is the problem then I have no idea.

If the calipers are solid disc ones then they won't fit but the disc od won't be the issue if the solid ones are 240mm (and I'm sure they are)

All solid front discs were 240, but you could get them in vented too.

All 260 front discs are vented.

cant post piccy at the moment - pooter playing silly buggers.


Might it be a rear caliper i have instead of a front?

With the piston pushed back flush, and new pads in i can get the 25mm thick vented disk in between them - would that make it a vented disk caliper as opposed to a solid disk caliper?

I'd guess it failed to upload coz it's 660K.
Try making it a tad smaller (200K ish)

Well that answers your problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry mate, had to laugh!!!

That's only half the caliper!!!

You need the mounting brackets for it too (the part you have there slides on "slides" on the bracket which go through the holes you are trying to line the bolts up with), these won't come with the recon caliper, you use the old ones from the donor.

Im sure i said a few months ago that im crap with Sierra bits,

Guess that confirms it

.........What a goon!

Does anyone have a piccy of their brake set up from the inside as opposed to the normal shots of the outside of the disk and caliper.


In my defence i did think to myself
These sierra brakes must bend the disk or wear the inner pad an awful lot more than the outer one!

don't worry mate! I have done much more silly things in my time, and at least you know it's nowt difficult to solve now!

If you don't already have the brackets from a donor then pop to your local scrappy, they won't want much for a pair of brackets at these don't really go wrong, it's the caliper bit itself that seizes etc (the bits that you have already!) so they will be cheap.

If you go to the scrappy and look at a sierra it will all become obvious to you. Worth a check in the wanted section in here in case somebody has some spare brackets (I don't unfortunately!)

I got worried then as those uprights used to be mine. I had the vented discs and calipers for them so i knew they fitted.

As said u need the carrier for the caliper. Easily got from a scrappie.
