Should this happen?

Hi,

I was always under the impresion that the rear MX5 differential was not meant to come apart with ease.

Whilst i was moving the car out the garage last weekend the one of the cogs that links the drive shaft to the diff popped out? Should this happen and if so how do i put it back? I have tried a simple push but it only goes in so far. I didnt want to give it a whack as it looked like if it is supposed to come apart then there is probably some logic behind it rather than just a swift twatt with the mallet.

Currently it looks like this.

Dif 1
Dif 1

Dif 2
Dif 2

Thanks, I very quickly realised that my welding skills were not anywhere near good enough hence calling in for help from a pro.

Any comments on the diff?

The MX5 diff has stub spindles that are just locked in with a circlip. To reinsert requires the skilled application of 'summat heavy' ... you do just tap it back in place. The little flared collar is meant to sit inside the oil seal lip as a guide on how far it needs to go back in.

Under normal working the distance between the diff and the rear upright doesn't change (or at least not very much), so there are no forces present to pull it open. However, I still needed to get a crowbar on mine to separate the stub spindles from the diff, so that does suggest yours wasn't clipped in.

Have you had it apart before? Can you still see the circlip on the end of the spindle, is it intact?

Have a look through the service manual and it should tell you how they are removed and installed.
