Fitting Sierra column to Escort rack
Sorry guys, I know this has come up on numerous occasions, but you know how you can never find the thread you want when you want it.....
Is there an easy way round the problem of matching the Sierra column to the Escort MK2 rack, even though the ID of the splined shaft at the end of the
Sierra column is larger than the OD of the shaft on the escort rack.
I'm sure someone posted a solution to this a while back but I've just spent nearly a hour trawling through old posts to no avail!
Any help or pointers gratefully received!!!
Cheers,
Cheffy.

PS. Column is off an XR4x4. Dunno if that's any different to other Sierra's though.
Cheers again,
Cheffy.

The lower splines end from a manual steering sierra is the same as the escort, but comes with a cast end. drill out the rivets on the rubber donut and
attach the extended shaft from a sierra column from a power steering sierra, replace the rivets with 10.9 M8 bolts. The sierra 4x4 column, may well be
the same as the normal powered column? has it got a 19mm round ERW lower shaft, not cast?

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reply. The shaft on the lower part of the column is 22mm diameter. The splined UJ on the end is too large a diameter for the splined
stub on the rack though. Sounds like the lower part of the column on the 4x4 is different to other Sierra's.
In which case, am I correct in thinking the easiest solution is to get a lower steering column from a 'non 4x4' PAS Sierra and that should
bolt straight on to the existing column at the top, and the Escort rack at the bottom?
Cheers,
Cheffy.

Yes, with a complete column from a power sierra, and the lower joint from a non power sierra you should be fine.

I had been wondering about this recently, but it wasn't urgent so hadn't bothered asking - what is the likelihood of me being able to find
this post when I need it!
Better print it now.

Yep, like I said at the top, I'm sure it's been covered before.....but you know you'll never find it when you need it.
Already put it in my 'favourites'.
Cheers,
Cheffy
