Handbrake compensator - opinions please

Hi Folks,

Another of my sva fails was the fact the handbrake wasn't compensated.

I run an english axle, with escort handbrake cables. The current set up is just a flat plate the when the handbrake is pulled, it pulls the cables.

The problem the tester said, is if one of the cables stretches or is out slightly, that one wheel will have more braking force than the other - and there needs to be a compensator.

Now as far as I can find, there isn't such a thing on the old escort (though I'd love to be proved wrong!!) so I have designed the following, that I will make from box.

The cylinders out of the near edge is meant to be the cables (which will slide in through slits (which I didn't put on the model)

The idea is the angled peice will be attached to the bolt which comes off the handbrake lever, and this will be attached via a bolt as a pivot to the rear box section, that can pivot due to the differing tension on the cables (if there is any misadjustament or strecthing)

What do you guys think? Will it work?

Made mine out of a piece of 1" angle iron, cables are Allegro and lever is shortened Sierra with the short connecting cable. Looking at yours it needs to pivot freely around the rod from the handbrake lever and perhaps be a bit wider at the point the cables attach. No need for over engineering unless of course you want to .

Hi,

thanks for the reply. How would you get it to "pivot freely"?

I dont want to over engineer stuff, but I can't get my head round an easy way to fix it!

However there isn't that much wrong with your current setup -- replace the bolt with a rose joint and use a bit of angle instead of flat plate you will meet his criteria BUT I can see another danger that the cable ends can slip out of the plate especially if one cable fails --- you really should add some effective method of locking the cable ends in the slots.

bit of round tube, hole in it size of hand brake threaded section, fit that before the bolt so the bar pushed / pulls against that (and make the hole in the bar bigger).

that should do it shouldn't it?

If space is an issue, cut the tube in half so its only 180 degrees bend not full 360 round tube.

sorry maybe I didn;t make it clear enough, that was a first mock up - the current item has nuts to stop the cables slipping out.

The idea of using half of a tube is a good one! thanks.

I'll muse some more.

I used a Sierra handbrake lever that has a short cable attached to it with an "eye" on the end to which I attached the angle iron using a short clevis pin. Allows plenty of articulation
