centralising steering wheel

Need to centralise my steering wheel, never quite got it back to the central position after titting around with toe out for SVA.
steering wheel is in the straight ahead position (handy having a horn push to set it by while driving) to get it central do I lenghten the nearside and shorten the off side or vice versa, can't take coupling off rack and move round one spline as from memory it has a master spline on it

make sure the RACK is centered and then you can remove the steering colum from the rack and reposition the wheel as it is multi splined on the rack

if its a escort rack, the collumn should go back on in any position. if not, on the rack itself, then on one of the other UJ (i presume theres at least 2 in there?)

Sierra rack, only other U/J is on the 3 sided sierra column, almost certain there is a master spline (one of the splines hasn't been machined) on the rack.

Can't u undo the wheel from the boss and move it round 1 position?

Was the rack centered and the wheel right before you adjusted the toe? If so then you can put it back by toeing out the n/s and in the o/s (as you said). If the rack wasn't centralised then you'd be better starting from scratch.

If your tracking is now correct & when going straight ahead you're in the middle of the rack, why not simple remove the wheel/boss from the end of the column & move it round, or am I being too simple?

Yes - what they said - the end of the sierra column has a hexagonal bit where the boss locates. Set the wheels straight ahead, take the boss off and reset it 1/6th of a turn around and you won't be very far away from right.

If there's a splined joint anywhere, you can pull it apart and re-assemble to get a finer adjustment.

If that doesn't get it quite right, you'll have to turn the steering arms to finish off. A turn or two will do it - one side screwed into the track rod end, the other side screwed out exactly the same number of turns.

Wheels about 30' from strieght. The flats on the column are at 60'. Not a lot of point moving the wheel on the column.

One turn on each track rod will put it somewhere close and if your rack was central to start before you altered the toe, it will be again once you do that.

If that is the position that the wheel is in when the car is driving straight and the tracking is now set correctly then mark the track rods and turn the drivers side one turn into the track rod end and the N/S out one turn . Road test and repeat as needed.

The track rod ends need to be equal distance to maintain correct geometry.
