How do I check if I have a Quaife ATB diff?
Alez - 20/2/08 at 09:07 AM

I've heard that, if you jack up the car, turn one rear wheel with your hand, the direction of the other wheel will tell you if you have a LSD or open diff. As I think about it, I guess this has to be done twice, first time with neutral engaged so that, if open diff, the torque that you apply will go to the other wheel not the prop?

I would like to know if this simple test is also good especifically for a Quaife ATB or else how to tell.

The guy who sold me the Fury said it had one installed (from the original Pistonheads ad, "New Baby atlas axle (Narrowed from a Capri 3.0 (3.09:1 - makes first gear useable) built by Gartrac with Quaife uprated 2 piece drive shafts and Quaife ATB LSD)." ) and there are invoices from Quaife an Gartrac that say that's the case, but a friend of mine says I have a normal open diff, based on visual inspection.

Cheers,

Alex

Is that a visual inspection with the diff out or through the backplate or just looking at the axle.

Hi With the ATB dif unit if one wheel is lifted of the ground then it dose revert back to an open diff. It only works when both wheels are on the ground.

I would however think that anyone who has spent that much money on an axle setup would have definitely put the ATB in. Only real way to check is to remove rear plate and inspect.

HTH cheers Matt

Thanks guys. I don't know if the casing has been opened for this, I need to find out (the car is now at my mate's for some rework, and that's 400 miles away!).

Sorry I'm so dumb but, removing this rear plate, does that imply emptying all the oil? If so, I don't doubt he did so because there's no need for any rework there. Anyway I'll find out next time we talk.

As to the money spent, the invoices from Quaife and Gartrac are high, only thing I can't check is if they are from my car..

Cheers,

Alex

Usual way is a quick check of your bank statement...you'll definitely spot a purchase like that....

I'd check your WALLET if that's empty - chances are you do

Er - as everybody else says, both wheels should spin the same way when jacked up

Bah! alan beat me too it - I had the reply typed then 'work' got in the way!!! Boooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Great minds think alike....or something like that...LOL

Very useful

Quaife Torsen diffs have a pre-load so both wheels should turn the same way when the entire rear is lifted. I got this confirmed from someone who has one in his kitcar.

Alez - 20/2/08 at 03:10 PM

Hi Aico, is that an ATB he has? As far as I know, these are not Torsens.. and my mates have been reading and seem to agree that the ATB may behave just like an open diff on such a test..

Cheers,

Alex

Aico - 20/2/08 at 03:18 PM

He has a Quaife yes. Like I said Quaife has a preload so torque is being transmitted even if both wheels are of the ground.

v8kid - 20/2/08 at 05:25 PM

Mine didn't and I fitted it myself and bought it direct.

Boot it in 1st gear - two black stripes LSD one black stripe - open!

OK guys, I've found that they didn't remove this rear plate. The test they did was engaging neutral, lifting one real wheel only, and turning it by hand, which they were able to do. In view of this and looking at your posts, I may be lucky with this after all

Cheers,

Alex

As procomp and v8kid have quietly, and correctly, said,

with the QUAIFE diff, the rear wheels will go in OPPOSITE directions, just like an open diff.

If there is preload in it causing them to go the same way, then sorry but your diff is knackered, as one of the shuttle pinions has jammed.

Yep, that won't test the quaife diff

I have tha ATB in mine, fitted it myself.
When new, the diff was quite stiff so both back wheels turned the same way, now it's done a few hundred miles the wheels turn opposite ways (just like an open diff).
Fraid you'll have to look at it.
You might be able to see enough through the filler plug to differentiate. Here's a picture

when they are brand new the pinions will not shuttle so freely, hence the drag

Some cutaway drawings and literature i've seen on the ATB's suggest they have preloading springs in the centre so that they still have some torque to operate with if one wheel goes in the air. Haven't played with one to confirm though...
