As an alternative that I've used to very satisfactory effect, just submerse your parts in malt vinegar.

Far less hassle than the electrolysis thing and far less chance of creating any of the nastier by-products that can occur (stinks really bad though!)

Use the car battery and connect the charger to the battery that way it will not trip out! you only need a small amount of washing soda!

Yep that's what I do.

I have gone a litte further and have dabbled with a little electro plating.

I use an old 12V bench CB power supply, such things can be had at car boot sales or on ebay for tuppence ha'penny I'm sure.

The "put a battery in parallel with it" idea sounds best for you though.

How long did you leave it in the electrolysis bath? All the components I have done came out with a black coating on them and no visible rust.

davie h - 6/2/08 at 04:45 PM

that was about 5 hours and after i had wire brushed it washed and left it to dry thats why you can see the rust starting reappear

ps i then gave it a clean with metal cleaner i got from halford that brought it up to almost new bare metal
