I'm trying to get my head around the propshaft and what fits what scenario and have come up with the following questions.

1. Are the UJ bearings all the same size (assume ford escort / cortina / sierra)?

2. If I split my donor 2 piece prop (with centre bearing) could I fit the gearbox attachment on the front of the rear section or the diff flange on the back of the front section?

In summary I was wondering if I could swap my 16 splined sliding end for my 4 speed onto a prop that was originally for a type 9?

and

I was wondering if coincidentally one of the 2 pieces from my donor prop happened to be the right sort of length can I get it all joined up.

Hi Kendo, I have done the very same thing as you are contemplating. The donor Cortina had a two piece prop and I used the front U/J (gearbox end) and the shortened rear shaft. If you have a lathe the job is fairly easy. The front U/J has a spigot that is inserted into the tube and then welded. If you carefully cut the tube behind the weld and remove the U/J it can then be put into the lathe and the residual tube and weld removed. One word of warning, make sure that the front and rear U/Js are aligned with respect to each other exactly as they were on the original propshaft. Also when arriving at the finished length, allow for movement in and out of the gearbox. I've done a number of propshafts in this way and none has failed or needed balancing. Best of luck

I made my own prop using capri and sierra parts, after I had finished I saw that the capri bit I was going to chuck was within 2mm of the new one I had made! An ideal candidate I think!

If you had disconnected the UJ at the centre bearing so that the rear section was left with half a uj at the fwd end. Could you have just fitted the gearbox slider on the end to complete the UJ and leave you with a complete prop?

Sealed unit UV's I'm afraid, but I am sure it is possible somehow.

Those are staked UJ`s which are easy to replace........ with the correct tool.

Any propshaft firm will be able to replace them for you.
