cjtheman - 5/4/07 at 04:01 PM

hi all i just came along a nice set of 7x16
alloy wheels
my build has got escort rear axle do you think that these wheels will be ok for this build
cos just by offering them up it looks like they are very close to the trailing arms
so what is the ideal size ( max size ) i should be looking at
cheers

Here we go! Are you ready for a barage of conflicting stories?!

13's look good and perform well thats a fact but you will get away with a larger wheel if you don't mind twitchier handling etc.

If it's the proximity to the trailing arms you're worried about you can always use spacers or go for wheels with a smaller offset.

I'm ignoring the diameter/width debate as you'll never get a straight answer on that one...

Hi big wheels in general are bad for our small light cars with independent suspension at the back.

But adding the extra weight to a live axle is bad news given the already higher unsprung weight.

Big diameter wheels and low profile tyres result in a harsh ride.

The more air in the tyre the smoother the ride.

knowing what I know now, I would have stuck on a set of steel 13 inch rims - way lighter than 15 inch fancy alloys that I have, next time maybe.

I will suggest something different.

14"

I have 14" they seem to be few and far between but if you want something bigger than 13" but do not want to harsher riding from a bigger wheel then try 14".

Just ordered a new set of 14" wheels and having Toyo R888's put on

I'm a member of the un-popular 14" wheels club.

Wheels came free from the donor. Tyres are 185/60R14's R888's.

Was a choice between paying for the SVA, road tax and a years insurance and buying a set of nice 13" Minilites.

Guess what won!

Cheers

didnt know r888 came in 14s, thats an excellent start!

I have done nearly 3,000 miles and 3 trackdays on mine

Bigrich measured the tread depth on his new tyres for me at around 6mm.

I have 4mm left on the rears and 5mm left on the fronts.

Must try harder!
