Hi all, i've got a set of standard locost shocks for my car but have upgraded to a gts de dion, thing is my shocks are i think 13" so was thinking could i mount them to the side of the brackets using longer bolts, (similar to an original escort axle) as opposed to on the top, like this. Does this make any sense?

Its what i do on my live axle. Westfield do it on their live axle as well ........

and you see a number of vans with the shocks in single shear.

(ok, i added an extra bracket to my axle so it wasn't in single shear).

The only issue you might have is the size of the bolt for the trailing arms and shock being different. If you've got Avo's they sell all sorts of sizes of bush for not very much. Give them a call and they'll sort you out.

Thanks for the advise on the avo,s. although i think mine are gaz shocks. I too added an extra bracket to my live axle and it seemed to work well. The other advantage to doing it this way will be that i don't have to cut off and turn through 90 degrees the upper shock mount, which is one less thing to do! Think i'll just go for it now, being messing around for long enough now!!

I was going to do that, but I was really not wanting to mount the shocks in single shear, even if other people do. Also it means the lower shock bush axis is 90 degrees to were it was intended. I think the GTS design is correct, putting the bushes under torsion in bump/droop rather than twising the bushes to one side which they don't like much.

Have to say though, I'm sure the shock bracket on my De-Dion is located/supported a lot better than that one seems to be.

There's not a problem with having the shock in single shear, the trick is in having it mounted correctly.

This is how to do it right.

It's the bottom holes by the way, the one on top is for the tailing arm.

The top pic that i originally posted was coutesy of flak monkey, its very similar to the gts one that i have, ( getting it was another story). If i could do it again i'd buy one from jroberts, as i've heard nothing but good things. I think its going to take just as long to try and move the shock mount and create a suitably strong bracket, so i'm going to sell my 13" avo' s and buy a pair of 11" protechs instead.

Not if the welding gun behind the axle is anything to go by, pay attention at the back.
Could you angle your top brackets in to use the longer dampers if the brackets are the other way on to live axle brackets?

Nope, that's just from our MIG, mind you it's a beast of a machine that can run all day at up to 300 amps.

Makes light work of welding jobs.
