adjustable column problem.?
GeoffB - 10/10/06 at 10:32 PM

i had an original non adjustable column which i have made a small technical error with and is now u/s. the local supplier did not have a non adjusting one so he gave me the adjuster bit (the cast bit)

First Prob: the non adjusting shaft was about an 1 1/2 " to short
So he gave me a longer shaft that now uses a bolt going in the end
got it all back togeather and..

Second prob: no matter what i seem to do to the adjuster/shaft length the steering wheel boss grinds on a bracket thats on the bottom of the cast bit.

i can adjust the shaft so that its clear of this bracket, but then i seem to be able to move the steering wheel and shaft in and out about an inch or so

It seems as though if i do the mounting bracket up so that theres tension on the spring that the shaft slideds on to therfore keeping the shaft out a bit further to stop the steering wheel from hitting this bracket,As soon as i bolt the steering wheel up the sliding triangular joint just moves down again and the spring loses it tension and i can move the coulum in and out again by an 1 1/2"

Wrong shaft, adjuster, they both have 90bb on them

or stupid user.?

I found that I needed a 5 or 6mm spacer ring behind the wheel to make mine work OK.

I think I was able to take that away once I'd fitted the plastic thingy that cancels the indicators.

I've had a similar problem when stripping my adjustable column down (right down to the bare minnimum now). There's a plastic collet that fits around the top of the column under the wheel that puts everything in place - it has a little tab that's used to work the self cancelling indicator mechanism.

Yep theres a plastic bit that sits on the end of the column. You could always make up a nice ali one if you had the time, as it would only need to be a sleeve, it doesnt need the tab on if you have stripped the column switches and everything off like I decided to do.

You can see the plastic bit just between the end of the column and the wheel on the right hand side of this pic
