Brake pipes & live axles
brynhamlet - 2/7/06 at 06:23 AM

How do poeple fasten the brake pipes onto a live axle with drum brakes (MK2 escort) They are currently fastened with tie-wraps which I'm sure would be a SVA fail. I thought of Stainless Steel tie-wraps but don't know were to get them from

usually tabs of thin sheet welded to axle and folded over pipes.

I used large jubilee clips (about 4" diameter from B&Q), undid them then reconnected them round the axle and the pipes. I slipped a piece of slit fuel hose over the pipes.

Or,

drill a small hole in a jubilee clip, a c/s screw through the hole from the inside, and fit to axle.

A "p" clip, washer & nut on the protruding thread.

I would follow the manufacturer on this one and do as has been said. Make some taps from 18swg mild steel and weld to the axle casing. It will look professional and as it was meant to be.

Drilled and tapped when the casing was bare, pipe fitted with rubber lined P clips.

Scutter, how have you sealed the threads to stop oil leaks or am I missreading your photo?

He's names Wellard. Been through a few fights that one.

Brought him home on the tank of my Yamaha. Loved it. Got his fins down an' everything.

Is he in a tank on his own? My brother in law had one and it ate everything else in there with it

No, five of them and a pleck.

At the moment the room light is off, the tank light is on and the window is open.

Big commotion every now and then when one of them catches a moth.

Owelly, It's just the way the pictures taken, the threads are an inch above the fill line, doesn't need sealing yet.

Seeing as the car is all but finished jubilee clips with p-clips fastened to them seems to be the best solution. Will report after SVA which with a following wind may only be a month away
