simple question, is a standard 1.8 sierra diff, strong enough for the output from a standard ford 2.8 V6???? (capri / granada / hearse)

I'm also going to put an RV8 through a standard Sierra diff and it should be fine due to light weight of the Locost. Unless you are looking at using dragster tyres with ultra sticky compounds and burnouts etc then you should be fine since the tyres will spin before the diff breaks...hopefully...

suppose a Granny diff might be chunkier for those safety concious of you out there.... (don't know for sure tho!)

consider an LSD out of an xr4x4 if you're putting through lots of power? also should aid handling and reduce wheelspin.

the granada diff is the same.

Essentially the granada and sierra are the same car from a running gear point of view with a few detail differences.

The Granada diff is a 7.5" diff and most Sierra ones (except for the Cossie) are 7"

My 2.4 V6 E reg has a diff that looks identical to the sierra.


The only visible difference on my car is that it uses lobo joints not the Y shaped spider ones and the diff has flanges not sockets at the drive outputs.


The ford manual that came with the car lists the diff ratios fitted and says mine isnt a lsd and also has the std 3.62 or 3.64 (?) ratio that the standard sierra has.

It even lists the diff as having the same capacity of oil as the sierra.

It does however list the lsd ones fitted as options as having a 7.5 diff that has a bigger oil capacity. The inferrence is that the bigger diff is the LSD.

I wonder why a granada with the same engine and similar weight (2 litre for example) would have a bigger diff?

Your 1.8 sierra diff is exactly the same as the one that would come with a 2.8 RWD sierra (7" non LSD, although may be different ratio) - so yes it's strong enough.

Not all grannies have the 7.5" diff. According to my granny haynes manual some 2.0 grannies and all V6 grannies have the 7.5". You dont need a 7.5 in a locost (not with 'just' a 2.8 anyway)

An XR4x4 diff is a 7" LSD and wont be any stronger than a non LSD 7" (I wouldn't have thought) although an LSD would be handy with a 2.8 in a locost.

I have fitted the younger brother of the 2.9 cologne - the 2.4 V6 to my car. If you need any more info I will try to help.

My gearbox came with the motor, so I have no idea of the length of my input shaft compared to Liams
