hey everyone, i was thinking about the steering that i want to put in my dax, since my donar has power steering,im a bit stuck as im using a pinto
engine. i was thinking of going for an mk2 2.4 turn quick rack that i have seen,( anyone know where i can pick one up on the cheap) but i need some
advice on a few things, first of all will it fit? and will the sierra column fit onto the escort rack, or will i have to mod it in any way. any
suggestions welcome
cheers guys
Alex
Use the sierra one - power steering doesn't matter, the bit of the column used is before the sterring pump.
Chris
oh no here we go again!
not a good idea to use the sierra pas rack without the hydraulics connected (in my opinion, having done it on my old rally car) even if you do gut the
seals and piston out of the casing.
get a manual sierra rack and spend the £100 on a quickrack kit from rally design.
do the job right to start with and you won't regret it later.
If you go for the escy rack, check rally design (www.rallydesign.co.uk) they have some super cheap new escort quickracks, £70 iirc.
Indeed.. see http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=37653
We still need a FAQ...
Guess I ought to clarify my last posting;
Dax only use the sierra column, and adapt that with some clever welding... the colum then goes into an intermediate shaft (to get the offset needed
for SVA crash protection) then into a 3rd party rack.... hence you can use the column from a PAS sierra as its before the power steering pump.... but
not the rack - which AFAIK won't fit anyway.... also beware quick racks with the large tyres taht the Rush uses, as the steering will be
heavy!
Chris
The sierra upper column ends in a triangular tube. You have to get a link made to go from here to the rack as the donor car link is too short. Have your link made to fit both ends
why do they need the column offset if they are using the crushable sierra column?
Don't know.... that was the explaination given to me by the guys there....
The really funny thing is that the steering is one of the things allegedy from the donor on the DVLA registration form!
Chris
PS did you (NS Dev) have to space out your clutch slave cylinder, if so how??

New Escort racks with 2.4 tltl are £79.50 from Rally Design!
If they'd been doing this offer when I needed mine Id have jumped at the chance!
Geoff
i saw the escort quick rack at rally design and that is the one that court my eye. ive been told that i will need extensions put on the ends of the
rack as the dax uses the sierra rack. could i leave the extensions off and have the wheels a bit closer to the chassis to give the car a bit of a more
aggressive look from the front, or would it be unsafe, am i right in saying that i will need a mod to connect the sierra column to the escort rack or
would it be better to get a sierra quick rack if the is such a thing?
cheers for the help guys

Or you can lengthen the original link from the Sierra by welding a section in the middle. That's what I did - the splines on the Sierra part match the Escort rack exactly
thats dead right Stu, the PAS spline is quite a bit bigger.
