What have people made to act as a handbrake balance bar?
I am particularly interested in those who have Sierra IRS back ends and use a Sierra cable, but any ideas would be great. Any pictures to give me a
bit of inspiration?
Hows it done on the Indy and other cars?
Thanks
As a suggestion how about using the Handbrake lever, rod, balance bar & cables from a Citreon AX, Peugeot 106.
Enjoy.
What do they look like?
Handbrake lever (two bolt fitting) swinging rod off back with balance bar into which cable inners fit. Rod is threaded with nut on the end to provide
for cable length adjustment. Outer cables fit into units mounted in the floor (could be cut out of Scrapper & mounted onto transmision tunnel in
appropriate place.)
Cant be more descriptive without a picture or you could visit a scappy & see.
Enjoy.
Now, if you were to buy the tiger book you'd see just how they do it..... oh, what's going on here? my scanner has just magically lit up, oh, and I
seem to have accidentaly left the relevant page open over it, oh and now it's gone and posted itself.
Shame, sodding book falls to pieces anyway.

Yep peugeot/citreon 106/ax would look something like that only I'm sorry to say that you could make it look a lot neater with very little effort.
Enjoy.

Where did you get the clamps for the cable. I need something similar.
Cheers

I believe they're used for trailers and caravans and the like.

I've done a balance bar set up which is adjustable on my Sierra handbrake. Picture on photo page, not too clear so U2U if you want more info.
Have you drilled through the middle of the bolt and passed the cable through it?
Yep, got local machine shop to do it, beer money. Thread cable from head end, cut two slots in the non head end length way up the bolt, unwind the cable into 2 bunches and lay each in a slot and tighten a nut on to bolt/over the cable ends. The result is that with another nut you can adjust cable length easy using balance bar, and cable held so firm it will never pull thru. Makes getting the handbrake adjustment easy. Sounds long winded but easy when you get what I'm talking about!
Zetec,
Perfect!! Just the sort of simple solution I was hoping someone would come up with.
I'll be sorting h/brake next week.

Zetec, probably being dumg but didnt quite get your explanation. Any chance of a pic?
Cheers.
I've just put another pic on the photo page, have a look. The white cable ties are holding the two cable ends in their grooves while I put the nut over the bolt, it's this nut which clamps the cable to the bolt tight. The groove in the bolt is about 15mm long and starts about 2-3mm deep at the end of the bolt, and tapers to nothing. Drop me a U2U if you want a sketch/drawing.
How strange,
The one I made at the weekend looks just like that! ;-)
clever, simple design, nice one
Is it SVA friendly, i.e. aren't you supposed to use the proper crimping thingys?
Yes, well not me, bloke with a lathe did it.
