Brakes again

Right, i'm some what confused.

Basically at some point soon, probably next month I am gonna fit a new brake setup to the dutton. Its currently running small mk1 escort discs and callipers.

The planned upgrade will be refurbed m16 callipers with mintex pads and solid discs. At the back the mk1 escort 8 1/2" drums will be retained.

The question is with which master cylinder to use. At the moment its a Girling mk2 escort one but I also have one of the tubular sierra ones. How can I tell what the bore is on the girling one? I've had a quick look at the markings but can't make on out as the bore size.

On the current master cylinder I have the following numbers, hopefully someone will be able to help identify it and the bore size.

Cast in to the side is 74660038 0231

and on the yellow tag 6194 01 23 RG

If your using fairly standard escort brakes (ignoring pad material), the my opinion would be to use the escort MC.

I may be wrong, but as I understand it, the escort MC should be about 19mm diameter and the sierra MC should be about 22mm diameter.

Factory Escort Mk1 discs appear smaller than new MK2 Discs but you may find that some parts suppliers list the same part number for both models, if this is the case your MK1 P14 calipers will fit.

M16 calipers alone will give little or no braking improvement over P14 although in theory the pedal effort should be reduced. The P14 is lighter and not as prone to sticking pistons and pads as the the M16 which caused a lot of problems on 70s Escorts and Cortina when the vehicles were new. The M16 also tends to give a less solid pedal.

As for mastercylinder size if it works with the current setup it will work with the M16 calipers.

So what do you reckon then? The brakes are pretty naff at the moment, I cant even lock the fronts no matter how hard I try. The P14's could do with rebuilding, the pistons are sticking. I dont know how old the pads are and the discs are past there best.

I was under the impression the braking would be much better with the m16's an bigger discs. I'm planning on doing some trackdays and hill climbs.

It's not a straight forward change either I need either capri or mk2 escort legs cut down and maxi ball joint fitted. If I use mk2 escort ones I need a mk2 rack and rod ends. If I use capri legs it will lower the car and inch at the front which would make the sump only and inch off the floor.

Do you think I should just get some recon P14 callipers, some new discs (maybe drilled or grooved) and some decent fast road pads?

Mk2 escort master cylinder bore is 19.05mm. They are all the same basically apart from stokes.

I have a pair of nice Mk2 Escort uprights and hubs cut down to just below the spring platform - shotblasted and primered if you're interested.
Just need new wheel bearings and the ball joint fitting to the top.

I also have a brand new pair of track rod ends I can thow in, although they don't match, they do fit.

Pat, they look ideal. Can you tell me if the steering arms on the back of the struts that the track rod end bolts to are the removable sort? If they are, i've been told I dont need to change my rack

No, they're fixed onto the upright just like the Cortina ones.
