I bought an mk Indy a few weeks ago.
It’s started to develop a knock when turning hard (ish) to the left.
What could this be?
Noise is coming from the back, don’t have much experience working on cars (done quite a bit with motorbikes), checked drive shafts for play and both
sides have the same amount (don’t have anything to compare them to). Near side bolts where drive shaft connects to diff were loose, but have now re
tightened them.
Really appreciate any help.

Rear hub nut coming loose jack the rear up and give it all a good check
It could be top suspension nuts coming loose at the outer end
I renewed mine with lock nuts and fitted a split pin

If its not whats mentioned above I would say wheel bearing or CV joint as the main culprits.

Could be a million things.
If you push the car with it hard left does it do it?
Hubs and wheel bearing are pretty robust but jack up and check?
The hub carriers have been know to fail/crack
Suspension joints/buskes siezed up, common
The big diff mount plates have been known to fail on these
Start looking and get back :-)
Does it knock once or repeatedly?
Does it only knock when heavy cornering and not light?
What diff/axle config do you have?
He says a Indy it will or should have a sierra rear end .
Unless he has a mk locost then it may have a solid axel

Knocking could be any number of things, I would start by checking all suspension components and fittings , diff security, prop shaft clearance to chassis, gearbox mount(could be allowing prop to hit chassis, it was a common problem with the standard type 9 mount ) Check for witness marks where contact is likely
Rusty Nuts just reminded me, but I built a Sylva Jester way back when and had a knock I couldn't find on hard cornering left I think it was.
Spent ages trying to track it down and then noticed some wear on one of the chassis members.
Under hard turning the engine was moving over enough on its mounting rubbers that the vibration of the engine was making the thermostat housing on the
xflow tap against the chassis. It was a very tight fit for the 1700 engine.
