for SVA does the engine compartment and bulkhead have to be sealed?
for instance do i have to have a rubber grommet or boot where the steering column goes through the scuttle?
i intend to put something there but wondered if it had to be done?
and what have people used to do this????
i was thinking something like this

No it doesn't, as long as wiring/hoses etc that could be damaged when passing thru the bulkhead are suitably protected, nothing else does.

Lovely Job, so just things that could be damaged have to be 'protected'
and off topic how many people put a support bearing on the steering column extension shaft?
No it doesn't have to be sealed, mine wasn't completely sealed and it was fine. (on the robin hood)
The major requirement for bulkhead/compartment sealing is that the compartment containing the fuel tank must be sealed from the passenger compartment.
They are quite hot on this, even if your tank is in fron of you and there are no sides, bonnet or bodywork on the car, the little bit of aluminium
between the tank and your feet needs completely sealing to the chassis, ask me how I know...

my fuel tank is mounted behind and above the rear axle... and all the fuel lines run through the prop tunnel
If you ever want top do MSA events such as sprints or Hill climb then yes, as well as lots of others!
But not for IVA Mine was not.

And can anyone suggest what gear stick gaiter/surround to use? I don't particularly like the black fake leather ones that droop and sag everywhere

What I would say is that in use any non sealed hole will force a jet of hot air into the cockpit
Sometimes with added oil or steam
I used expanding foam, sikaflex and adhesive silver tape as appropriate
Don't under estimate how hot the engine bay gets, the manifold also runs close to the footwell, I also used insulation mat inside the footwell
and heat reflecting stuff in the engine bay all over the bulkhead and part way down the tunnel
