steering rack nut covers
locoboy - 18/6/04 at 08:29 AM

Not sure if this is an sva/legal one or a running gear one!

Can someone tell me the diameter of the trackrod locking nut on the sierra or escort/cortina racks and also the diameter of the rod that comes out the steering rack? I have a bit of an idea in my head for a SVA protective nut cover jobbie.

I know Tifosi do one but i think what im planning may be a bit better.

The nut is 21.5mm A/F and the rod is 12mm dia at that piont

Bingo, Cheers Gordon.

I shall go home tonight and try the fitting over my spare rack and take some piccys, it should be ok, it will be tight to stop water and grime ingress and there should be no need for cable ties either. They will be available immediately too if they fit ok.

Youve got me intrigued now

locoboy - 18/6/04 at 09:24 AM

Calm Down Dear its only a nut cover!

You shall see in time Gordon! it may require a bit of lubing up to fit over the 21mm A/F nut.

By the way was that a sierra rack you were talking about? is a cortina/escort one any smaller?

You need to see an electrican for some glands for swa cables they come in various sizes/colours and are very cheep or free if you know a sparks

locoboy - 18/6/04 at 10:35 AM

Barrie,

Thats what tifosi sell you and it looks pretty poo i reckon, its too loose a fit at the big end.

What i have in mind would be lot better - if it fits

Mk-Ninja - 18/6/04 at 11:58 AM

Yes Col it was the Sierra Rack, dont know about the escort unit.

try heatshrink sleeving then it fits a treat

mangogroove - 18/6/04 at 12:48 PM

you use size"20" as twenty fives are way 2 loose. ex sparky

What happened to this great invention

locoboy - 21/6/04 at 11:59 AM

Gordon,

I left the bloody things at work on Friday! I will try to get them on my spare rack tonight and take a piccy. I have put them in my jacket pocket now so i dont forget them today

JoelP - 21/6/04 at 02:11 PM

i bought some of that self amalgamating tape today, bloody expensive! £6 for a small roll, and maybe not a guaranteed pass.

locoboy - 22/6/04 at 09:40 AM

Im pretty sure these would be SVA friendly but they dont quite fit. If they were dunked in hot water they would fit but i dont think its a practical option when fitting the rod ends.

Smaller hole diameter is just over 8mm and the larger hole is 19mm, total length is 66mm I didnt have much time to try them last night and i didnt lubricate the threaded end for ease of assembly.

Other then that if they can be made to fir its a worthwhile consideration dont you think?

What are they off.

You could warm them up with a heat gun

locoboy - 22/6/04 at 10:09 AM

they are actually protective covers for flexi brake lines for lorries, they are called whip guards, the flexi hose comes out the small hole and the big hole slides over the union. helps to heel it clean and stops the flexi "whipping" about therefore it doesnt need securing to anything.

Heat gun option may be ok, not every builder has a heat gun and with this sort of product you want it to be simple and easy to just put on, after all its supposed to be one of the less taxing SVA jobs!

locoboy - 27/6/04 at 11:43 AM

Here it is chaps,

I cut about 6mm off the thin end purely because its length was making it too flexible to push onto the threaded rod.

I put it in hot water fo about a minute and used a bit of WD40 and on it went the larger end went on pretty easily with no lubrication required and as you can see its a nice tight fit around the nut and the rod.

I didnt cut it particularly square thats why it doesnt look the best but hey its on now! and no cable ties required.

With a little fettling it will ba possible to get it on without cutting any off it, i reckon it will go on if you wrap the thread in insulating tape and use some oil/grease.

Cant upload piccys at the mo cos they wont appear in my archive
will try later on.

Tis working now
