I have mk2 escort steering column, 900 mm long and short length of 600 mm with UJ at each end to connect column shaft to steering rack. (black)
now to gain more clearance where I propose to put my big radiator, can anyone see a problem with this? (red)
this is to extend the column and shorten to 600 mm the UJ piece.
not mearuse angle between the two rods but they won't get crazy.
what is best way to weld up a piece into the column - put cone on end, clamp it in angle iron to keep it stright and build up the cone?
or should I leave the column alone and put in a 3rd UJ, locating shaft in rose joint?

Is this vehicle SVA/IVA'd?
If not, i think the front section needs to be outside 30 degrees or something?
post SVA.
just looked it up. says if angle is more the 30 degree, then UJ won't work but angle needs to be more than 10 degrees for the protection to be
effective.
what I propose will increase the angle.
quick update.
the build manual (formula27) states to use mk2 escort steering column but to extend it by 10 inches and allegro wsteering coupling.
in my case, whoever built it, extended the steering coupling, grr......
this not only decrease the angle but interferes with the wide rad I just bought on ebay.
As luck has it, I have a spare allegro coupling but the UJ knuckle lines exactly with the radiator. more ggrrr.......
so:
I need to extend coloumn and perhaps extend the coupling but not as much - or shorten the one I have.

Why don't you move the radiator instead of making more joints in the column. Apart from that just sleeve and weld the column, no problem as long as your weld is good and the sleeve is tight fitting.
