snapped rack extension!!!!
locoboy - 18/8/09 at 04:40 PM

Guys i have managed to snap my steering rack extension.

The balljoint was loose in the hub and rather than hit the nut on balljoint to tap it out i tapped (and i mean tapped) the rack extension and it fell in two!

Good job it did because look at the porosity in the material it is made from!

Those marks in it are from me trying to chisel out the broken off end, it was deforming like cheese. Im gonna have to drill it out i think.

naturally i am ordering another pair from a different supplier and changing the one that aint broken too - better safe than sorry.

did someone say cheap steel?

blakep82 - 18/8/09 at 04:53 PM

where did you get those from? just so no one else makes the same mistake

Looks like it's been rather roughly machined as well.

Blimey, thats a cheap bit of steel if ever I saw any!

The other thing that is worth bearing in mind is that you don't need to do the TRE up very tight onto the extension. If you do you will weaken the material as you wil stretch it at that point. It only needs to be just nipped up, about 15lbft at the most. Same with lock nuts, they can also cause weak spots.

Cheers,
David

Oh dear, this is what happens when we send good quality British Corus steel to the far east and then they melt it down and send it back to us as this shit
