a quick question please

On the drivers front wheel on my indy, the attached looks like it is broken/torn/snapped.

front wheel thingy

What is the proper name for the broken bit, and how do you replace it. - idiots guide please.

If the rubber is the same as an escort one , I have a few new one's here - unless it's covered a lot of mile like that , the track-rod end should be fine - I could bung one in the post ?

It has been like that for some time..Paul Fisher spotted it at Bruntingthorpe last year, but I forgot all about it.

Is water ingress an issue I should be concerned about?

Claire, thanks for the offer. I have a sierra set up, so I do not know if they use the same size as the esort?

I'd just get a new track rod end for what they cost - less than a tenner down the local motorfactors.

Thanks for the replies folks. I will inspect the ball joint as soon as I can. I looks ilke there was a lot of grease around the cover. Steering does not feel heavy at all.

If I can replace the rubber cover, what do i need to do?

Just take it off at the upright end - wind the nut up level with the top of the thread and give it a sharp tap - dead square on - with a hammer (unless you have a suitable ball-joint splitter ?)
Then wind the spring clip off and remove the rubber . You will be able to see straight away if it's knackered
If it's ok - pack with new grease , and fit a new rubber - job done
U2U me your address and I will stick a rubber in the post - if you dont use it it's no big deal !

Edit to add - the hard bit is getting the spring clip back on without damaging the rubber.......
