Vertical Number Plate Size please
Hi All
I'm fitting a fog light, and will be fitting a number plate illuminating light, and need an idea of
the size of a 7 digit LEGAL number plate.
i.e.
.Q.
123
ABC
I believe it's the size of the letters and the spacing between them that's important and the size
of the yellow background is not critical, but I could be wrong. (I usually am)
Could somebody measure one for me please?
Maybe a 4X4 has this type of plate? Or has anyone this shape on a seven?
Obviously I'd like to keep the yellow background to a minimum while keeping the letters legal.
The pic below shows why I need this shape of plate

There are a couple of things you need to know regarding the dimensions. The first is the 'standard' dimensions :
Number plates fitted after 1 September 2001 must display characters that meet the dimensions shown below.
Characters
Height 79mm
Width (except the figure 1 or letter l) 50mm
Stroke 14mm
Space between characters 11mm
Space between groups 33mm
Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) 11mm
Space between vertical lines 19mm
The character width has been slightly reduced from 57mm to 50mm to accommodate the Euro-symbol on the number plate.
Secondly, due to Jap imports there is a little loopet in the law which states :
Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:
The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval
AND
The vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates
Specifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)
Character Height 64mm
Character Width 44mm
Character Stroke 10mm
Space between characters 10mm
Which happen to be the sizes for a standard motorbike plate....
So the interpretation is that if it won't fit, and you've had it SVA'd then you are legally allowed to do it....

if you look at the first table you should be able to work out the sizing of the plate that you want!
But I also have to add - is that definitely the shape of plate that you want? Have you considered a standard "legal" size Bike No. plate?
- I think legal size ones are 9" x 7".

Bad news, 3 line numberplates are no longer legal (since 2001) according to the DVLA.
There isn't a fixed size defined by the DVLA, but the ones I've seen are 285x203mm. To work out the minimum size see

Hi All, and thanks a lot for all the replies.
Using the info from the replies I've done a P/Shop pic of what I could get away with.
With 4 letters on the top line @ 44mm this would give me a plate 228mm wide.
With the right hand side of the plate on the start of the corner rad this would leave 60mm
between the left hand side and the spare wheel. (see pic)
Does anyone see a problem with that?
