steering wheel boss

Does the steering wheel boss have to collapsable for SVA.

I have an Astrali wheel and a boss but I dont think its the full collapsable type of boss.

Any thoughts...

I also have a full collapsable boss but it does not fit the Astrali wheel .. Should I just buy a cheep wheel to fit this.

Are you using a sierra column? if so most people just use the standard sierra wheel for S.V.A. and change it after.

As long as your column is collapsable, you should be ok.

I cant use a sierra steering wheel, so i've got a 11inch wheel fitted.

Just need to make/fit SVA padding to the exposed metal parts of the wheel!!!

But it gives a much larger SVA exemption area on the dash.I used a whell from an RS escort which is not quite so big.

The bigger the wheel the better IMHO - the sterring wheel zone covers some of the clocks (depending where you have them) so they dont have to be radiused off for SVA and also any additional warning lights should you need them. The wheel can always be replaced very easily and serves more of a function than for the cat walk... and it is very SVA compliant!

Paul,

I had exactly the same problem - I rang Astrali about SVA-worthyness.
They said that it is a collapsable boss, and the wheel can be protected with their special boss/spoke cover, but it's never gone through formal approval as it would have cost them too much money.
So, they consider it's a safe wheel & boss to drive with, but they couldn't guarrantee that it would get through SVA; they recommended fitting the Sierra wheel until after the test! I fitted the old wheel to my car - it did a total of about 100 miles before it was removed! It has now been donated to another builder who's approaching his SVA.

Mine passed last year with an Astrali boss. I made a point of telling Mr SVA that it was collapsible, and with a Manta steering column, he was happy.

Ahhh, bloody hell, another manta column user!!! Thought I was the only one!

The Manta column is collapsible so I don't think the steering wheel boss needs to be (it isn't in the manta) but it won't hurt.

As another question then, will the std manta GTE steering wheel pass the SVA test???

Manta wheel will be fine, just keep the padding on for SVA. I cut the padding off and used it on a Mountney wheel on both cars. See pic (first car). The pad is still on mine, I quite like it!
