number plate illumination
now, i don't expect these to be very bright, and for the price i don't mind the risk buying them, but are there any rules on brightness
for number plate lamps?
thinking of these
WHITE CHROME LED LIGHT NUMBER PLATE SCREW BOLTS 1 Pair | eBay
according to this photo, they seem to work ok...
the other option i'm looking at is to make a sort of box to recess the plate, and put one of these type of white lights in the box
http://www.ledautolamps-uk.com/productshow.php?catid=12&productid=51
actually similar to what the y type bodies leyland leopard buses had... i like them!

you see its got a glass cover with rubber strip, but the light is behind the glass under the plate.
here's what the back is looking like, in case you don't remember
Description
if the led bolts would be 'ok' then i'd just screw them into the rear panel...
any thoughts?

I don't think testers care about this as long as there is something present. Has anyone failed on this ever?
As tests are performed in the day time with no numberplate so it is all a bit academic!

i thought that might be the case, as manual just says yo uhave to have something. but then for SVA, the tester had to decide if stuff was suitable for
the job, which IVA seems to miss... for under a tenner for a pair, I might give them a shot... they seem quite bright anyway

the Construction & Use regulations requirement is "adequate illumination" but an approval mark is required.
I would strongly recommend fitting a plain jane standard number plate light illuminating the plate with 2 x 5watt bulbs at least until after IVA,

hmm, yeah, a normal lamp unit it is til after the test then...
confused that the IVA manual says nothing about approval markings though!
looked on ebay, standard type ones all seem a bit expensive

Go to your local motor factors and pick a trailer one up, they cost about a fiver, not sure what markings they have on them but the manual says
nothing about this.
I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

I brought a plastic chrome (like classic mini or cobra) at Detling a few years back and I think from Memory it was about £5.
It must have been ok as past IVA in April.

I passed SVA with one of these
5 leds, no markings.
Has anyone failed IVA from a dodgy numberplate light?

I am thinking about using them to iluminate my toggle switches rather than illuminated rocker switches.
