Get in quick for your SVA ?

Copied from proposed manual.........

"1. The exhaust system must be securely mounted.
2. Exhaust system components must be secure.
3. There must be no leaks from the exhaust system. See note 1
4. The exhaust system must be fitted with a silencer.
5. The measured sound level must not exceed 99dbA.
6. There must be no exposed part of the vehicle manifold, header pipes,
silencer or Catalyst that can be contacted with a 100mm sphere. See note 2 "


And here is note 2..........

"Note 2: This requirement is to prevent other road users being seriously
burnt by coming in contact with these extremely hot components that
on an “Approved” vehicle would normally be covered by body work"


Am I reading this correctly ? No side exit exhausts ?

Yes, you've read that right, last minute addition apparently.

Spoken to the car manufacturers Dax/DJ sportscars and they're furious. Expect this to be changed (hopefully) due to pressure from car manufacturers. Also bikes, tractors and lorries have exposed exhausts, so the clause is out of place.

My plan?

Get the car onto 4 wheels, push it in to a test centre for SVA before april, fail due to having submitted a half finished car, then retest within 6 months under the old SVA regulations during which time I'll have finished it off

yeah, it makes a lot of sense.

I bet the hospitals are full of injured persons that have burnt themselves on side exhausts.

Has anybody checked just how unfinished a car can be and still get tested?
They can refuse to test under some circumstances, including...

Non runner or insuficient fuel/oil...
Dirty or dangerous condition...
Load or items on the vehicle not secure.
In a condition that (in the opinion of the tester) could be a damger to the tester or others to test...

One guy on here put his exhaust in the engine bay for SVA [on a BEC I think]. Can't remember who though.

How many SVA Retests are you aloud to take? Is it just the one? I was planning on starting my build after xmas so dont think there would be much hope for me finishing before the iva kicks in. if i could take 2 retests it would give me an extra year to finish it .....

I guess you'd just make a cover for your side exit exhaust.

You're allowed as many as you can pay for, but the window is only 6 months from your first test date under initial SVA regulations. After this 6 month window you are expected to retake under IVA regulations no matter what test you originally took.

Therefore if you get a test and fail in March as SVA, you have until the end of September to finish. These individuals will be the last people ever to be treated under SVA regulations.

How about a simple wire frame tacked around the the exhaust about an inch off it? A bit like mark allansons but not as heavy gauge or in red. More like the sort of grille you get on 70s gas fires. Wouldn't take much to knock up surely? All you would have to do is make sure its just fine enough to stop the dreaded sphere of doom getting in between the wire rungs and make sure the radius is large enough.

The regs state the exhaust shouldn't be contactable, I think it could still be exposed down the sides as before. I hope.

trouble is, youve got to do it to the whole exhaust after its exits the car, not just the silencer which would look bloody terrible! just another 'fell off officer'! thing isnt it, bleedin ridiculous

Note the new noise limit of 99db, not 104 as for SVA.
Accepting that hot exhausts are dangerous I don't see how there can be rules to cover car exhausts but not bike exhausts. Presumably there will be a motorbike IVA in due course as there is a current MSVA. Will this insist on covered exhausts when you can buy a commercial bike with an exposed exhaust.Will motorbike exhausts be exempted, and if so on what grounds or will all vehicle exhausts including bikes end up covered and what would Honda, suzuki etc say to that.
I can't see this bit being workable.

The motorcycle exhaust 'concern' will be rectified when the Nanny State ban motorcycles from Jan 1st 2009 (to be announced).
Stalin and the Badger will ensure that by the time you've finished working in Tractor Factory 7, you've been taxed to pay for the State, you've no money left to worry about SVA.
Problem solved.

Positive note... we can still use non-type approved vehicles in the UK, it's just getting harder.
