Of course we have the good old ford box but what other alternatives are out there for a front engine rwd car.
Would have thought it would depend on which engine you are using or is there an adaptor plate or bell housing available to suit? RX7 , MX5 or BMW boxes may work?

Why 4 speed?
You could put a 5 or 6 speed box in and not use 2 of them
Thinking of a 750 formula car. They use the fiat fire engine and the regs say 4 speedbox. Just after ideas of what’s out there
For 750 formula Reliant springs to mind, but could you not use a modern, lightweight box & simply remove a ratio?

Something that you can get suitable ratios and a close ratio gear-set which will go with what rear axle ratios you can get. Sounds like a Ford
Escort/4 speed Sierra or MG Midget gearbox (Ford probably can be made stronger than Midget) - Midget parts from Peter May Engineering or Magic Midget;
Ford gearbox bits from Burton Power. And who makes adaptor plates?
Lovely rwd Datsun and Toyota gearboxes from the 1960s/1970s will be rare and difficult to get parts for.
Are you allowed straight cut gearsets?

Have you discounted the type 2 Ford box? its a 4 speed, and fits to a Ford engine without any mods
Ive used them for years and would never change it for a 5 speed, theres no need
Austin A35/40/ Sprite/ Minor gearbox used to an alternative to the Reliant boxes in the Formula 750 racing.

That is a good idea I did not think of that.
Aluminium Type 9 casing with the Aluminium Type E tail housing because a 5 speed Type 9 is a Type E with the 5th gear in a longer tail housing
