Number plate size
Paul (Notts) - 20/2/08 at 05:45 PM

Having looked throught the Photo archives on this site I am a little confused on what size number plate to fit on the front.

Lots of cars seem to have small ones about 9 inches wide. Are these legal?

How small can I go?

In the above link does anyone think the bit that refers to

"Vehicles that do not have Whole Vehicle Type Approval"

and,

"The Vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates"

applies to us?

Nope that only applies to imported
vehicles.
My front plate has cost me £60 so far
in fines in 5yr spread over that time not
to exp and not once told to change it evan
escapes mot as an advisery.
My advise stick to std rear but a smaller
front as they cant see that following you

thats mine below look much
better that std

My mate just kept his tucked down the side of his seat. When he got stopped he just explained that he had hit a traffic calming bump and so he had picked it up to refit when he got to a safe place to do so.

Worked every time!

Having read the above link, it does not make mention if the front number plate needs to be vertical or not.

Is it acceptable to use a stick-on number plate on the nosecone? Such as THIS

My old evo number plate was 8" x 2"

The best line by a traffic copper was "Oh it is a number plate i thought someone had left the price tag on it"

I just laughed and then got a good talking to..Apparently having a small number plate is against anti terror laws or something

The fines £30 everytime your caught

I kept the plate as it cost me a fortune in fines

full size stick on plate.

(before you ask, is illegal too but at least it is correct size).

One way to reduce the size is to get a personalised plate. Mine was only 5 characters long and I bought a standard plate which had big gaps at the end and cut the ends off.

This is the best way... You only need 11mm round the edging of the letters to be legal.
