another stupid sva mirrors question
ned - 12/5/05 at 01:10 PM

having read the draft sva manual, i don't understand part of the definition:

quote:

d. in the case of a four wheeled vehicle obligatory
mirror only, a reflecting surface area sufficient
to accommodate a rectangle,
• in the case of an interior mirror 40mm high x
80mm length

• in the case of an exterior mirror 40mm high
x 70mm length and a line parallel to the
height of the rectangle not less than 70mm
in length.

what does the 'line parallel to the height of the rectangle not less than 70mm' bit mean?

thanks,

Ned.

I read this as "a rectangle 70mm wide and 40mm high will fit on the mirror bit". I made a rectangle out of card and tried it on my external mirrors - fitted easily.

This may well be a misunderstanding, but my mirrors were well over the size of the bit of card so I didn't take it any further.

Hi Ned i'll try to explain if you have a mirror that is 40mmx70mm along the height of it it must be at least 70mm high

let me try again if you have an oval or tear drop shape mirror it must have at least a 40mmx70mm area BUT must be at least 70mm high at its highest bit

(i must learn how to do digrams)

i know all this because i fail on this and had a heated discussion about it with the tester.
hope it makes sense

Oops! I'd forgot the "it's got to be 70mm high somewhere in the width of the rectangle" bit.

It's amazing how the SVA headaches fall away once you're a few months after passing...

dos the 70mm height have to be continuous glass? or could youget a rectangular mirror and tilt it upwards? (ie i want to use an spa mirror)

I think your moving the goalposts ned (the test man will only refer to the book)
imo stick the biggest mirrors you can and then change after sva (I did)
after my fail i put on some mirrors from a trials motorbike on (see photos at sva http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/photos.php?action=showphoto&photo=oscar%20006.jpg) then changed back i still see enough out of the small ones.
