Can someone just confirm what information HAS to be on the VIN plate, I guess one is chassis number but is there anything else that must be there.

BTW: the local DVLA office may also ask you to stamp the VIN somewhere else on the chassis as well; I have a plate next to the battery that shows the obvious "public" number, and a second one stamped on the frame just behind the radiator. I suggest that you ask them sometime.

As far as the chassis number goes I have just made up a 17 digit chassis number which is what I put on my SVA form.

Apart from putting this number on the SVA form should I also let anyone else such as my local DVLA know what this number is. If this is the case do I tell them I made the number up or say that it was allocated by my kit supplier (i.e. MK sportscars)?

Sorry for all the questions but just trying to ensure that once SVA is sorted I can get on the road without delay.

It's always worth confirming the VIN with your local DVLA office - some will let you choose your own (as long as it meets the requirements) but others insist on allocating one.
If you want to get ahead of the game then I strongly recommend getting in touch with whoever deals with kit cars in your local office - it'll save a lot of pain in the long run.

I would definitely inform the local DVLA what your number is. Tell them its stamped on the chassis as well and I doubt they will have any problems with it. (Unless its the same as someone elses.....which is extremely unlikely)

Also, don't forget that you cannot use 'I' as a character. Can be a '1' though

Be very careful when using your own vin number. My DVLA insisted on them supplying it and I had to get a form filled in by a garage to say the number had been stamped on the chassis.
You should note that the number shoud be stamped on the right of the vehicle !

There is a note in the DVLA bumf that the number should be readable from the Right side of the vehicle but as they are so inconsistant, I'm not surprised that there are variations.
Just thought it was valid to try to keep the info to the letter of the law.

The VIN is repeated on the front of the chassis, on the tube just behind the radiator (as I mentioned earlier).

Blah Blah..... "The number should be stamped / embossed on the OFFSIDE of the vehicle, in a clearly visible and accessable position, and by a method such as hammering or stamping, in such a way that it cannot deteriorate or be oblitorated. It should also be stamped / embossed on a plate which is attached to the vehicle".
Just trying to give the correct information from experience and by the letterof the DVLA.

Mine is clearly visible with the bonnet off - do I have a problem?
