Damaged chassis plate

The chassis plate on my donor car is damaged.

Is the chassis plate needed for geting the locost registration an age related plate.

Can i get a replacement chassis plate.

My donor became coke cans ages ago, I kept the chassis plate just in case (and to stop anyone using it as a ring kit). no one has asked me for the plate or the donor yet, I have a new chassis number for the car, so I think you will be OK

If its a ringer the danger is the engine number might turn up on the computer as stolen -- every vehicle built in the last 15+ years or so has the chassis number stamped on the shell in more than one location --- at least one of these locations should be quite easy to find the others should be quite well hidden -- check the boot area and under the front carpets

If yer building a kit then ask the chassis supplier for a number.
If yer building from scratch then just make up a number but it must be at least 17 characters.

Does a 1978 escort have more than one chassis no. on it, if so where?

I dought its stolen though, the plate damage was done late one night when removing the engine.

on the police shows, most cars seem to have chassis plates under the carpet inthe drivers footwell.

You name the car, and I will tell you where the stamp and plate is. I check about 10 a day, but I am a bit shakey on the older stuff

copy of V5 before and letter from DVLA after scrapping is also ok for registering.
On the making a number up, I was told no by them and they issued me with aa number. You also need to mark the chassis (stamp the number) as a plate is no good on it's own.
Thats my experience anyway

I removed the VIN plate from the donor, then cut the chassis number out from just by the drivers seat floor and removed the number plates. I showed all these plus the V5 to the DVLA inspector. He made a note of these items and gave me them all back except the V5. No chance of that old wreck being used as a ringer now.

Bought my kit, together with donor bits, Dec 2001. When I called to look at it, there were all the donor bits inc. V5, but no vin plate. So I quickly rang my local VRO, who said not to worry. He advised that I checked the eng no with the V5, and if it matched deal probably legit. He also said no need for vin plate at any time, just V5 for later purpose of reg.

I just been through the process, i submitted all my paperwork to my local office (best to go there), i kept my VIN plate from my donor but they did not ask for it they only wanted the V5, along with all my reciepts etc. They then booked the local police vehicle inspector to come and look at my car, he rang the VRO and they issued a new VIN number to him which he then stamped into my chassis in 2 places, job done, Number will start with SABTVRO then a random number sequence, hope this helps For an age related plate you just need to prove the use of more than 3 major assemblies from your doner ie engine, g/box, steering column, diff, this is all filled out on a sheet at your VRO and the police confirm this when they look at the vehicle

You only need 2 major components from your "donor" to get an age related plate.
I claimed that I had used both axles and the steering from my sierra when I had actually purchased reconditioned front uprights and the steering rack was from an mk2 escort.

Car was inspected by DVLA in Stockton by a young girl that was only interested in the chassis and engine number.

All sounds good news, however the engine doesn't match up with V5, the block is blue and the gear box has a number painted on it (sure its not ford origional), it all looks like some body either had a new or reconditioned engine and gearbox installed.

Can get the V5 updated (i'm sure you should after an engine change) and will they object if i then register my locost for an age related plate shortly after.

My father was able to make his own number. Police were never involved. Lassy from DVLA did the inspection (same as Snuggs experience). Q-plate applied for and recieved in Jan05.

As for engine number on V5. I junked the DOHC and fitted a Pinto. Im intending to send the V5 away with change of engine and then present that for registration to claim engine as one of the major components. Listening to Snuggs reply that is not needed - i have already used diff, driveshafts, uprights, steering coloumn and rack, front and rear brakes etc from donor (albeit all refurbed or replaced). Will this do?

I must say im tempted by Q-plate to save future hassles.

How can they tell that most of the listed items are from the car, only the engine etc. has an identification number on it and the V5?

They can't

However, make sure you DON'T produce any receipts for parts that you claim are from the donor.
