Hi,
I have a dilemma with my roll cage and would appreciate your opinions on the best thing to do!
I bought the cage kit from GTS years ago, it wasn't all that expensive to be honest. When I came to fit and weld the thing the side bars really
were not quite long enough. I did the best I could with it and just about made things work but really I struggled to get much clearance around the
steering wheel.
I think its OK with a smaller wheel but there's no way I can get the sierra wheel to fit.
So here comes the problem - what to do for IVA?
I don't think legally it needs to have a roll bar so an option could be to simply not fit it but I feel that an inspector will see that its
obvious that I have left bits of the car and we will get off to a bad start.
Maybe I could find a steering wheel with adequate padding that's small enough but I don't think that would be simple.
My final option is to chop the forward protection off and turn it into a simple roll hoop - sods law if I do this I will then go on to have an
accident and wish I had kept the full cage!

What would I do?
Hmmm... I'd chop the front bit off.
What diameter is the steering wheel you have fitted?
My MK Indy only had a welded on roll hoop (wish I'd gone for a welded in cage) and I did the SVA with the original Sierra steering wheel.
In your case I think I'd be tempted to cut out the front of the cage, but I'd imagine it will be hard to do it neatly and then hard to refit
it if you want to.
just pad put the alloy part of the wheel with foam to make it radius friendly?
could you move the steering column to the left?
moving the column would be a big job and look a bit odd I think. Pretty sure I moved it as far to the left as was reasonable at the time for this
reason.
I think the wheel in the photo is my 11" diameter. I have a 12" which is the one I would prefer to use.
So do many ppl have success padding an aftermarket wheel?
I think once the cage is chopped off that will be it, it would be impossible to put back together again. I think though that I could cut it off and
clean up the hoop OK though.
Ideally I would like to keep it as is and see if it annoys me once I'm on the road. I need a way to get through IVA though.
Cheers

Could you add a spacer behind the wheel (which would bring it closer to you), it looks like then the roll bar will effectively be behind the wheel rather than next to it?.
A spacer would move the Mountney wheel ok but this isn't really the problem, I need the sierra wheel to fit.
Given me a thought though, maybe I could put a spacer behind the column bracket to move everything further forward.
I need to get a coat of paint on the cage and get it fitted to the car again for a proper look. Its a bit of a job to fit now as the scuttle needs to
be removed but its possible in an evening.
My sierra wheel was from an 'A' reg non-pas model and is absolutely huge! Is there a smaller ford wheel that would fit the sierra column?

Thanks for the advice everyone. You have helped me to decide! I'm going to fit the cage and then look at making the steering wheel IVA
compatible.
Will the steering wheel boss need to be a collapsible type? I have a standard sierra column fitted. The manual is a little confusing to me on this
point.
Cheers
A standard Sierra steering wheel is not colapsible I don't think?
So I would say the column will be fine
Roll cage isn't IVA'able, so remove it for the IVA and re-fit after? So long as any bits left are not failing IVA, it's just an optional part so why should anyone frown at it?
For info, i went through IVA with an aftermarket steering wheel.
I found a foam cover for another wheel somewhere online, trimmed it down to side and cable tied it over my steering wheel.
Passed no problem!
So if you feel the clearance between wheel and cage is too small, just get a smaller wheel.
My Momo Race passed IVA at Norwich last year.

Will it pass IVA ?
I passed my iva a few years ago with cage and aftermarket wheel. Covered the wheel centre with a pad and any bolts/ edges on the cage.
Examiner never mentioned anything.
